POLYNOMIAL EXPRESSION
DIVIDE THE POLYNOMIALS USING LONG
EXAMPLE 1: DIVISION

Divide 2x2 + 5x – 25 by x + 5
• The dividend is 2x2 + 5x – 25 and • Multiply the divisor by 6x and
the divisor is x + 5. subtract the result from the dividend.

2x
• Begin by arranging them as follows: x+5⟌ + 5x - 25
- 10x) - 5x – 25
x+5 ⟌2x2 + 5x – 25 • Repeat the process using the last
line –5x -25 as the dividend.
2x 5
• Divide the leading term in the dividend by the x+5 ⟌
leading term in the divisor to get the first term - +10x)
2 𝑥 2 +5 x − 25
of the quotient: - 5x -25
=2 - (-5x -25)
0
Therefore, or = (x+5) (2x-5)

EXAMPLE 2: DIVISION

Divide 6x2 – 26x + 12 by x – 4

• The dividend is 6x2 – 26x + 12 and • Multiply the divisor by 6x and
the divisor is x – 4. subtract the result from the dividend.

6x
• Begin by arranging them as follows: x-4 ⟌ - 26x +12
- - 24x)- 2x + 12
x-4 ⟌ - 26x +12 • Repeat the process using the last
line –2x + 12 as the dividend.
6x 2
• Divide the leading term in the dividend by the x-4 ⟌
leading term in the divisor to get the first term - 6( -𝑥24x)
2
−26 x+12
of the quotient: - 2x +12
=6 - (-2x + 8)

Therefore, or = (x-4) (6x-2) + 4

EXAMPLE 3: MISSING TERM USING LONG DIVISION

Divide x3 - 14 x2 + 225 by x - 5
Therefore,
x – 9x - 45

x - 5 ⟌x3 - 14 x2 + 0x +225 or

- (x3 - 5x2)
- 9x2 + 0x = (x-5) (

DIVISION OF POLYNOMIALS
USING SYNTHETIC DIVISION

TEACHER: JACKIE JOHN L. LLANORA

SYNTHETIC DIVISION

Synthetic division is a quick method of dividing polynomials.

• It can be used when the divisor is of the form

x – c.

• In synthetic division, we write only the essential parts of the long

division.

EXAMPLE 1: SYNTHETIC DIVISION

Divide 3x3 + 4x2 + 8 by x + 2 using Synthetic Division

• Begin by equating the divisor to zero to get the value of x and can be used as
divisor in synthetic division
x+2=0
x = -2

• Write the appropriate coefficients to represent the divisor and the dividend.

-2 3 4 0 8

3x2 - 2x + 4 Quotient

In using synthetic division, take note of the acronym BMA

• B – BRING DOWN
• M - MULTIPLY
• A – ADD Therefore, = 3x2 – 2x + 4
