Welcome to your portfolio Template
This portfolio will show your journey and development towards creating an innovative Business
concept that relates to your pathway Hospitality or Business.

• Follow this template guide and add in your work as you progress.
• This is a blank canvas you can make it your own.

Please ensure you take time to present your work clearly. It is important that the assessor
understands the following: Your message, Ideas, Concepts and Outcomes.
Your portfolio needs to be no less than 15 and no more than 25 slides, (including cover and references).
DEFINITIONS OF THE RESEARCH TOOLS THAT YOU WILL USE THROUGHOUT THIS UNIT:
You will need to use the research tools and skills that you have learned throughout term 1 and 2.

MIND MAP - Mind maps are a text-only tool to help you get your ideas down clearly on one page. Words can bounce off each other and
can create new ideas. You can make as many mind maps as you need. 

MOOD BOARD - Mood boards are a tool to collect images that help you to define your ideas and create a vibe/mood and a clear visual
direction for your research. 

PRIMARY RESEARCH - Research you conduct yourself. Your thoughts, ideas, interviews, surveys, diagrams, artwork, images, designs,
sketches, photographs etc… 

SECONDARY RESEARCH - Research that involves already existing data. Someone else’s thoughts, ideas, interviews, surveys, diagrams,,
images, designs, photographs etc…

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT- Develop your business ideas through 3 of the 4 business models.

ANNOTATION - A text note that explains or comments on an image.

There are several reasons annotation may be used. above.

For example:

• Analyse the work of an inspirational artist or designer


• Describe a technique
• Record ideas
• Explain the thinking behind an idea
• Using annotations can demonstrate evidence of planning,
decision-making and problem-solving ability.
Sketchbook Example
• Annotations can be used for your own reference, e.g. to
note how you achieved a technique or record an idea you
might like to try later.
Digital Example
• Analyse the success of a technique, idea or composition
SUSTAINABILITY
The discussion of sustainability needs to be
present within your project.
We need to see that you have created one or
more sustainable design solutions.

The main theme of this project is decided by


you.

Sustainability can be your main theme or it


can be a small thread that runs through your
outcome.
Project proposal
• For the first part of your project you will complete the project
proposal.

• You have a word template which you will use for your formative
submission for you proposal in week 4.

• You will then copy the information from your proposal, time line and
SWOT into this and the next 4 slides for final submission.

Introduction
Write a few sentences to introduce your project.
Outline how you have developed your ideas within the main aspects of
your concept.
Create a Mind Map of your ideas
Create a mind map outlining your ideas and concepts in relation to
your project theme and research ideas.  
• Write down your thoughts about the theme of your project.

• What are your projects key words?

• Critically explore these keywords on your mind map.

• Continue to extend your mind Map.

• Consider the advantages or disadvantages of your ideas, this


will help to inform what direction you want to take your
research.
Create a Mood board of your ideas
Use mood boards to define your ideas and create a vibe/mood and a
clear visual direction for your project. 
Your mood board can contain primary
images or secondary images or both. You
can make as many as you need.

Choose images that show a clear direction


indicating your approach to your theme.

Communicate your ideas clearly through:


• Font/text/annotations
• Layout/image choice
• Colour/Mood

From the first look your mood board should


communicate your theme without having to
physically explain.
Primary Research
Make a start by creating primary research.
Primary Research is research you have conducted first-hand. You can
create this in numerous ways, such as:

• Questionnaires that you create


• Interviews you conduct
• Photographs that you have taken
• Visiting restaurants, retail spaces etc... (Relating to business or
hospitality)
Secondary Research
Secondary Research is research you have conducted second-hand, you
collect this from sources that already exist and in numerous ways, such as:

• Websites
• Videos/films
• Books/Magazines
• Documentaries / Interviews.
• Photographs
• Diagrams
• Any already existing data
Business / Brand Development
Business / Brand Development is responding and developing the research that you have conducted so far.
This can be presented through:

Business models / concepts​
Investigate, develop and implement the below concepts into your Business model.

• USP – Unique selling point​


• Consumer Profile​
• Marketing Mix – 4P’s​
• Branding
• PESTLE

Unique Selling Proposition


What makes you unique? What does your brand do well? What does your consumer want? What does your competitor do well?

Consumer Profile
Who is your consumer? What are their - Demographics? Geography? Behavior? Psychographics?

Marketing Mix – 4P’s​


Product – Price – Promotion - Place.

Branding
Brand elements – Name, Slogan, Logo, Tone, Character, Packaging.

PESTLE
PESTLE analysis on your project idea. Looing at the key external factors: Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental
factors.

• Your final design needs to reflect the accumulation of your design


solutions and developments as well as being informed by the ideas
gained from your research.
Evaluation Report
EVALUATION 
For the assessment you need to show us that you can critically evaluate your own
work by reflecting on your experimentation, use of technical processes and ideas
development. 

Answer the questions to answer below for your evaluation - 

• What were your strengths and weaknesses?


• Did you encounter obstacles and if so, what did you do to overcome these?
• Did you conduct strong primary / secondary research?
• Did you develop design solutions connected to sustainability?
• Could you have used more techniques for your design development?
• What would you have done differently?
