Fluid Flow in Porous Medium

1) Darcy's law governs fluid flow through porous media based on experiments showing vertical water filtration through sand. 2) The law of conservation of mass states that the mass in a closed system remains constant over time as mass cannot be created or destroyed. 3) Fluid flow in porous media is governed by the diffusivity equation, which can be derived by combining the law of conservation of mass, Darcy's law, and an equation of state for radial flow, assuming the reservoir is homogeneous, fluid flow is horizontal, the fluid is monophasic and slightly compressible, and pressure gradients are small.

Fluid flow Porous midum

Governing law.
The basic law governing the flow of fluids through porous media is Darcy's Law,
which was formulated by the French civil engineer Henry Darcy in 1856 on the
basis of his experiments on vertical water filtration through sand bed.
Mass of Conservation

he law of conservation of mass or principle of mass conservation states that

for any system closed to all transfers of matter and energy, the mass of the
system must remain constant over time, as the system's mass cannot change, so
quantity can neither be added nor be removed. Therefore, the quantity of mass is
conserved over time.
Diffusion Equation
2. The Diffusivity Equation
Fluid flow in porous media is governed by the diffusivity
equation.
To derive it in its simplest form, various assumptions and
simplifications have to be made:
· the reservoir is homogeneous; constant properties throughout
· fluid flow is horizontal only, in a zone of constant thickness
· the fluid is monophasic and slightly compressible
· pressure gradients are small, and Darcy’s Law applies.
The diffusivity equation can be derived by combining the law of
conservation of mass, Darcy’s law and an equation of state. For
radial flow:

This equation can only be solved in

Laplace space, and with certain boundary
conditions.
