Quiapo Church

The Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila is one of the most prominent churches in the Philippines. QUIAPO CHURCH
The Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene known
canonically as the Parish of Saint John the Baptist and
also known as Quiapo Church, is a prominent basilica
in the district of Quiapo in the city of Manila,
Philippines. The basilica is famous home for the Black
Nazarene, a dark statue of Jesus Christ said to be
miraculous. The basilica is under the jurisdiction of
the Archdiocese of Manila and its current rector is
Rev. Fr. Rufino C. Sescon, Jr.
STA. ANA 1586
The mission outpost of the Franciscans from Sta. Ana
de Sapa became a town by the decree of Governor
General Santiago de Vera. Two years later, it became
a parish with Fr. Antonio de Nombella became the
first pastor of Quiapo Church

RECONSTRUCTION OF

Fr. Magdaleno Castillo started the reconstruction of
the church. The famous architect and National Artist,
Don Juan Nakpil designed and supervised the
construction with the helped of Doña Encarnacion
Orense in raising funds for the project.

(May 26, 1899 – May 7, 1986)

The country’s first National Artist for architecture, Juan Nakpil


was born in Quiapo, Manila on May 26, 1899 to Julio Nakpil, a
musician, and Gregoria de Jesus, the widow of Andres
Bonifacio, both of whom were illustrious leaders of the
Philippine Revolution against Spain.

The church was reconstructed in


1933 from plans by Nakpil. Its
edifice has slight baroque
influences.
Quezon Institute
This beautiful building is an Art Deco masterpiece
set in the middle of a sprawling, 6.5-hectare
property along E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue. Built in
1938 for the Philippines Anti-Tuberculosis Society,
this amazing example of Streamlined Moderne has
delicate bridges linking several pavilions and
various Art Deco details on the interior and
exterior.
The Capitol Theater
This famous theater in downtown
Escolta is another of Nakpil’s Art
Deco gems done in an exaggerated,
geometric style.
The University of the Philippines-Diliman
Administration Building
More popularly known to UP students as
Quezon Hall, this 1950s building hosts the
board of regents of the University. It is a
beautiful example of Nakpil’s postwar
architecture and serves as a gateway and
along with the famous Oblation sculptureas
a grand entrance to all those who enter the
university.

Jose Ma. Zaragoza and Engr. Eduardo A.
Santiago.

ZARAGOZA was the last Architect who was

Santo Domingo Church
Santo Domingo Church, formally known as the
National Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy
Rosary, is the largest church in Metro Manila
and one of the biggest churches in Asia. It is
dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus under her
title Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.
QUIAPO CHURCH
The church was reconstructed in
1933 from plans by Nakpil. Its
edifice has slight baroque
influences. The expansion of the
church was initiated by Msgr. Jose
Abriolwas under the supervision of
Architect Jose Ma. Zaragoza and
Engr. Eduardo Santiago in 1984.
Casino Español de Manila
Casino Español de Manila is a club
established in 1893 by Spaniards living in
the Philippines as their exclusive venue for
recreational and social activities. It later
opened its doors to Filipino members to
foster Spanish-Filipino ties in the country.
QUIAPO CHURCH 1987
In September 28, 1987, His Eminence, Jaime Cardinal Sin blessed the newly
remodeled church and sought recognition of the church as a Basilica.

In December 11, 1987, His Holiness, Pope John Paul II granted the recognition of
Quiapo Church as the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene because of its role in
strengthening a deep popular devotion to Jesus Christ and its cultural contribution
to the religiosity of the Filipino people.
