WHAT IS
IMPRESSIONISM
• Impressionist art is a style of
IN
painting that emerged in the mid-to-
ART?of a moment or
late 1800s and emphasizes an artist's
immediate impression
scene, usually communicated through
the use of light and its reflection, short
brushstrokes, and separation of
colors.

• Impressionism was a radical art movement that
impressionism
began in the late 1800s, centered primarily around
Parisian painters. Impressionists rebelled against
classical subject matter and embraced modernity,
desiring to create works that reflected the world in
which they lived.
• Impressionism coalesced in the 1860s when a group
of painters including Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and
Pierre-Auguste Renoir pursued plein air painting
together.
• The movement made its official debut in 1874 in a
show hosted by the Paris photography studio of Félix
Nadar. This show was an alternative to the Académie
des Beaux-Arts’ Salon de Paris, which had been the
official exhibition and overseer of art world standards
since 1667.

Quick, Loose brush strokes- the most commonly talked
about and easily recognized of the Impressionism art
characteristics.
• Bright Paintings- colors and brightness differed by artist and
different times during the movement, but in general you’ll see a
lot of brightness in Impressionism art.
• “En Plein Air” (Outdoor Painting)- The Impressionists
wanted to capture a moment in time and the feeling or
“impression” of that moment. So, they painted “en plein air”,
meaning out in the open.
• Relative color- In capturing the moment they were painting,
they captured objects and colors as they saw them. The artists
wanted to depict objects in the light that they saw at certain
times of day or in certain environments.
• Clearer picture from further away- As you get close to the
canvas, you see the artist’s hand in every individual brush
stroke and glob of paint. But the painting lacks detail. As you
move further away from the painting, the scene, the emotion,
and the details become clearer.

thought that followed years later.
