INORGANIC POLYMERS
Polymers having skeleton made up of atoms other than carbon are called inorganic
polymers. Broadly speaking, inorganic polymers are hybrid systems that have
advantages of metals, ceramics and organic polymers, while at the same time have
minimum disadvantages.
Examples:Polyphosphazines,Silicones,Polysulphur nitride,etc.
POLYPHOSPHAZINES
Inorganic polymers that contain phosphorous atoms as central atoms of unit particles.
The general formula representing polyphosphazines can be represented as
It’s monomers molecules can also be visualized from it’s name as:
phosph- presence of phosphorous
azo-presence of nitrogen
ene-presence of double bond
PREPARATION
Polyphosphonitrilic chlorides are prepared by treating phosphorus pentachloride and
ammonium chloride in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane.
APPLICATIONS
They are used as catalyst in preparation of silicones.
They are used in wire insulation/metal coating.
They are used in preparation of thermos-polymers.
They are used in preparation of gaskets(flexible plastics).
SULPHUR BASED POLYMERS
Inorganic polymers made up of Sulphur because of it’s catenation property are
called Sulphur based ploymers.
It can be divided into two categories:
i)Polymeric Sulphur(PS)
ii)Polymeric Sulphur Nitride(SN)n
POLYMERIC SULPHUR(PS)
It is prepared by melting rhombic Sulphur at 165-168oC and pouring it into ice
water.
S8 is converted to free radical which on combination with S8 produces long chains.
