Pencil Shading Techniques

Pencil shading techniques are used to add depth and realism to 2D drawings. There are several types of pencil shading including crosshatching, which uses intersecting lines; smooth shading, which involves soft, consistent strokes; and stippling, which uses dots. Other techniques are slinky shading using fast back-and-forth motions, squirklings with curved lines and circles, circulism with small circles, and contour shading following the shape's lines. These shading methods help emphasize depth and contours through shades and shadows.

PENCIL SHADING

TECHNIQUES
PENCIL SHADING
SHADING IS A PROCESS WHICH IS USED TO
MAKE A 2 DIMENSIONAL DRAWING/SKETCH
MORE REALISTIC BY EMPHASIZING THE
DEPTH AND CONTOUR OF THE OBJECT BY
APPLYING SHADES AND SHADOWS. IT IS ONE
OF THE FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF ART.
TYPES OF PENCIL SHADING
TECHNIQUES

1. CROSSHATCHING – THIS
METHOD REQUIRES YOU
TO DRAW ALTERNATING
SETS OF LINES THAT
CROSS OVER EACH OTHER
IN A CRISS-CROSS PATTERN
2. SMOOTH PENCIL SHADING – THIS
INVOLVES VERY SOFT STROKES, AND
INVOLVES CONSISTENT AMOUNT OF
PRESSURE TO EXECUTE PROPERLY.
YOU CAN USE PIECE OF CLOTH OR A
PIECE OF TISSUE AND RUB IT
AGAINST THE GRAPHITE TO CREATE
A SMOOTHER TRANSITION BETWEEN
THE LIGHT AND SHADOW OF YOUR
OBJECT
3. STIPPLING PENCIL
SHADING – ALSO KNOWN
AS POINTISM, IT IS A TYPE
OF PENCIL SHADING
WHICH IS MADE UP OF
DOTS TO CREATE THE
DESIRED SHADING TO THE
OBJECT
4. SLINKY PENCIL SHADING
– IT IS A TYPE OF PENCIL
SHADING WHICH USES
VERY FAST BACK AND
FORTH MOTIONS USING
YOUR PENCIL. YOU
EVENTUALLY CREATE A
LINE WHICH RESEMBLES A
SLINKY.
5. SQUIRKLING – A
SHADING METHOD THAT
USES RANDOMLY DRAWN
CURVED LINES,
SQUIGGLES, AND
SCRIBBLES WITH
CIRCLES TO CREATE
TEXTURED VALUES
6. CIRCULISM – A FORM
OF SHADING WHICH IS
MADE UP OF SMALL
CIRCLES TO SHADE
YOUR WORK
7. CONTOUR SHADING – A
SHADING TYPE THAT
FOLLOWS THE CONTOUR
OF A LINE. OR THE LINES
OF THE SHAPE OF YOUR
PARTICULAR IMAGE.
