Frédéric Chopin was a famous Polish composer and pianist born in 1810 in Żelazowa Wola, Poland. He began playing piano at age 5 and composed his first work, a polonaise, at age 7. Chopin studied at the Warsaw Conservatory and left Poland in 1830, eventually settling in Paris. There he fell in love with writer George Sand. Chopin died in 1849 in Paris and his heart is buried in Warsaw. He is renowned for his mazurkas, etudes, waltzes and polonaises and is honored with the annual International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.
