Here are the steps to represent sets using Venn diagrams: 1. Draw overlapping circles to represent sets. The number of circles depends on the number of sets involved. 2. Label each circle with the name of the set it represents. 3. Elements that belong to only one set are written inside that set's region. 4. Elements common to two or more sets are written in the overlapping region between the sets. 5. The overall background region represents the universal set, containing all possible elements. 6. “Today, we are going to proceed to our next topic,
but before that let’s first have a short game.”

This afternoon, we will play “BRING ME”. I will

divide the class into 5 groups. I will tell you later
what you will need to bring to me in front.

I will be giving you just 5 seconds to bring to me the

object.
Every time your group is able to provide the item,
you will earn one point.
I will accept more than one object but different
characteristics.
For example, I asked for you to BRING any coloring
materials.
Group 1 brought watercolor, Group 2 brought
colored pencil, and Group 3 brought colors.
In that game, each group will earn 1 point.

The group that gains the most points will be declared

the winner and will have an incentive in our activity
later.

Do you understand?

Okay. Are you ready?”

“BRING ME”

Bring me any writing material…”

Bring me a Peso bill less than ₱500

Bring me any piece of paper

Last, Bring me, any food

Lesson proper
Here in the table, we have 4 groups of objects that I asked in the
game.
Writing Peso Bills Piece of Paper Food
Materials

Can anyone name the groups?

There is actually a term that is used to refer to a
collection of objects.
Does anyone know the term?

What is a set?

A set is more specifically defined as a collection of

certain different things (objects, ideas, numbers, letters)
that belong together for a certain reason.
Let’s take the first group of objects as an example. This
is a set consisting of a pencil, a marker, and a pen. Now,
Why do we consider this as a set?

These objects share the same characteristics.

What about the second group? Third group? Fourth

group? Do they have the same characteristics?

From our table, what are the writing materials that
you brought?

Materials
pen

pencil

marker
The pen, pencil, and marker are called elements of
the set.
We can indicate that an element is a member of a
set by using the symbol for set membership (∈)

We can say that the pen, pencil, and marker are

elements of the set of Writing Materials
Let’s apply the concepts of sets to the set of real
numbers.

For instance, we can state that 1 is an element of

the set of natural or counting numbers

1∈N
We can also indicate an element is not a member
by using the negation / of this symbol.

example

∈ N
Can you give me a
well-defined set?
Notations and Symbols for Sets.

Uppercase letters will be used to name sets,

and lowercase letters will be used to refer to any

element of a set.
Consider the set of natural numbers from 1 to 5.

Let this set be set A.

How are we going to write this set?

One way is through the listing or Roster Method.

Here, we write the list of the elements of a set,
separated by commas and enclosing the list in
braces.

A = {1,2,3,4,5 }
Example 2. List all negative numbers more than

Let B, be the set of negative numbers

more than -10

B= {}
An important rule when listing the members of the set
is that each element must be unique, no 2 members of
the set may be the same.

Example
List all the counting nos. from the group:
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 9, 9, 11, 11, 13, 13, 13, 13
C = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 }
What about if there are lots of members?
Example

List all the set of positive numbers from 3 to 100

C = {3, 4, 5, . . . , 100 }
Example List all the set of integers

An ellipse can be used to indicate a continuation of

the pattern.”

C = {…,-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, . . .}

A set can also be defined by stating the properties that
its members must satisfy

Instead of listing all the elements of set A, we can just

write it as

A = {odd numbers less than 30}

Set Builder Notation.

To define a set using set builder notation we use a

symbol typically a small letter to represent any
element of the set.
Example
The null set is an empty set.

The symbols

∅ or { }
Example

Name a month with 35 days

Answer: ∅ or { }
Operations Involving Sets.

The operations performed on sets are union and

intersection

The union of two sets X and Y is equal to the set of

elements that are present in set X and in set Y.

The symbol for union is ∪

In union, we just combine all the elements of the two
sets.
Example
Given: A = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4 } B = {0, 2, 4, 6, 8}

Answer

A∪B = {0,1,2,3,4,6,8 }
Note that an element that belongs to both sets is listed
only once.
Example

Given: C = {a, e, i, o, u} D = {a, b, c, d}

Answer

C∪D = {a,b,c,d,e,i,o,u}
The intersection of two sets is a new set that contains
all of the elements that are in both sets.

In intersection, we just list the elements that are

common to both sets.

The symbol for intersection is ∩

Example

A = { 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 } B = { 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 }

Answer

A ∩ B = {0,2,4}
