Mini Project: Shah & Anchor Kutchhi Engineering College

The document is a mini project report on finding the Laplace transform of periodic functions. It contains the definition of a periodic function as one where f(t+T)=f(t) for some period T. It then gives the formula for calculating the Laplace transform of a periodic function f(t) with period T as L[f(t)]= (1/1-e^-sT) * ∫ from 0 to T e^-st f(t) dt. An example problem is worked out to find the Laplace transform of a periodic function f(t) that is 1 for 0<=t<a and -1 for a<t<2a with period 2a.

THEORY Laplace Transform of Periodic Functions

Definition: A function f(t) is said to be periodic function if there exist a constant T (T>0)
such that f(t+T)=f(t), for all values of t f(t+2T)=F(t+T+T)=f(t+T)=f(t) In General ,
f(t+nT)=f(t) for all, Where n is an integer and T is the period of the function.

If f(t) is a periodic function with period T ie. f(t+T)=f(f),then

Application: Laplace Transform of Periodic Functions

 The Laplace transform is a mathematical tool which is used to convert the

differential equation in time domain into the algebraic equations in the
frequency domain or s-domain

 The Laplace transform can also be used to solve differential equations.

 It is used extensively in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering.

Problem: Laplace Transform of Periodic Functions

As the function is a periodic function, therefore,

4
Hence, the equation (4) can be written as

Using the binomial series expansion, we can write,

Where,

The is the Laplace transform of the first period of the time function. The eqn. (6) represents the periodicity property of the Laplace
transform.

Problem: Laplace Transform of Periodic Functions

Qns) Find the Laplace transform of f(t)=1 for 0<=t<a , f(t)=-1 for a<t<2a and f(t) is periodic
with period 2a.
Ans)
