Rangeland Physical Characteristics: Group 2

Rangelands are vast natural landscapes dominated by grasses, forbs, and shrubs. They are characterized by low and erratic precipitation, poor drainage, rough topography, and often low soil fertility. Some key physical characteristics of rangelands include their topography, soils, climate, hydrology, vegetation, and wildlife. Rangeland soils tend to be shallow with low organic matter. The climate in rangelands ranges from arid deserts to humid grasslands. Water availability is often limited with resources unevenly distributed. Rangelands support diverse wildlife and are used for grazing and other purposes.

Rangeland Physical

Characteristics

Group 2
What is Rangelands?
• Rangelands are vast natural landscapes dominated by
grasses, forbs, and shrubs, and they are characterized by
their physical and ecological attributes.
• Rangelands are lands generally characterized by low and/or
erratic precipitation, poor drainage, rough topography, and
often low soil fertility. They occupy some 47% of the earth's
surface.
Some of the physical characteristics of rangelands include:
• Topography • Hydrology

• Soil
• Vegetation

• Climate
• Wildlife

• Land use
Topography

Rangelands are found in a wide range of

topographic settings, from flat plains to steep
mountain slopes.
Soil
• Rangeland soils are often shallow and low in organic matter,
but they can vary widely in texture, fertility, and nutrient
content.
Remaining rangeland soils may be;

• Rocky

• Steep

• salt affected, or
otherwise not very
productive compared
to prime agricultural
lands.
Climate
Rangelands are found in a range of climatic zones,
from arid deserts to humid grasslands, and this
affects the type and productivity of vegetation.
Hydrology
Rangelands are often characterized by limited
water availability, with water resources being
unevenly distributed across the landscape.
Vegetation

Rangeland vegetation is dominated by grasses

and other herbaceous plants, but it can also
include shrubs and trees in some areas.
Wildlife
Rangelands support a diverse range of wildlife, including
large herbivores like bison and elk, as well as predators
like wolves and coyotes.
Land use
Rangelands are used for a variety of purposes, including;
These physical characteristics are closely
interrelated and contribute to the unique ecological
characteristics and functions of rangelands.
