Adding and Subtracting Polynomials - Grade 7

Polynomials are algebraic expressions with one or more variables raised to a power. They are combinations of terms joined together by addition or subtraction. The degree of a polynomial is determined by the highest degree term. When adding or subtracting polynomials, only similar terms—those with the same variable raised to the same power but possibly different coefficients—can be combined.

The degree of a term is determined
by the power of the variable part.

Why do we care about the
degree of terms?
Polynomials
Referred to by the

OBJECTIVES
Objective 1

classify algebraic expressions which are polynomials

according to degree and number of terms; and

Objective 2

add and subtract polynomials.

How can we say that our terms
are similar or dissimilar?
Similar or dissimilar

In adding and subtracting polynomials, terms that

are exactly the same, or different only in their
numerical coefficients can be combined. These
terms are described as similar terms, otherwise
they are dissimilar.
Example:

 Only similar terms can be added

or subtracted.
