Magnetic Earth

The document discusses how compasses work by using the Earth's magnetic field, with one end of a compass needle always pointing north towards the Earth's magnetic south pole. It explains that certain materials like iron, steel, cobalt and nickel are magnetic and can be attracted to magnets. The document describes experiments students can do to test different materials and see how magnets attract and repel each other depending on whether their poles are north or south.

Magnetic Fields
Starter task:
Talk: How does a compass work?

Compass: A magnetised piece of metal that can

swing around. One end always points north.

Compasses are used with maps for navigation.

Objectives:
● Identify magnetic materials.

● Explain how to arrange magnets so they attract or repel each other

● Describe the Earth's magnetic field and how it affects compasses

Activity: Testing for Magnetic materials
In today’s practical you are going to test which materials are magnetic.

Take a magnet from the pack and test a variety of materials to see if they are magnetic.

Place your finding in the table below:

Material Magnetic Y/N?

MAGNETIC MATERIALS
Iron, Steel, Cobalt and Nickel are all MAGNETIC MATERIALS.

This means they are attracted to magnets.

It was noticed hundreds of years ago that if a piece of magnetic material was hung from a
thread, one end would swing to point North and the other would point South.

Magnetic materials are used to make bar magnets,

which do the same thing if suspended from a thread.

Attraction and Repulsion
How do magnets behave when they are near each other?

Using two magnets describe what happens when you put the south poles together, north
poles together and opposite poles.

Extension: Using this information and knowing the Earth is a giant bar magnet, start to
explain how compasses work.
Task:
1) Write down the three materials
that are attracted to magnets.
2) Why do magnets have a south
and north pole?
3) How can we tell if we are
holding two magnets?
4) What happens when we cut a
magnet in half.

Extension: how do you explain

this?
Earth as a Magnet
Talk to your partner about the following
questions whilst looking at the diagram:

1. Where is the north pole?

2. How does this relate to the magnet?
3. If a compass is small magnet and the earth
is a big magnet, why do you think
geographical north and magnetic north are
different?
MAGNETICS
The end of a compass pointing North is called a North-seeking pole (or
North pole). As opposite attract, it points towards magnetic south. So the
geographic North Pole, is actually the South Pole of the Earth as a
magnet!
The end pointing South is called a South-seeking pole (or South pole).
Where does this point?
It points to the South Pole (geographically), the
magnetic north.
Task: Complete your worksheet.
