Lesson 2

This document provides information about calculating upper and lower bounds when rounding numbers. It begins with an online activity on rounding to decimal places. The lesson objective is to give appropriate upper and lower bounds for data given to a specified accuracy. Examples are provided to demonstrate calculating upper and lower bounds when numbers are rounded to the nearest 1 decimal place or 2 decimal places. A general rule is explained that to find the upper bound you add half the rounding unit, and to find the lower bound you subtract half the rounding unit. YouTube links are included for additional examples. Independent practice problems ask students to calculate limits of accuracy for side lengths of shapes and calculations. Homework involves creating a chart with family member heights and their upper and lower bounds.

Lesson Objective: Give appropriate upper and lower
bounds for data given to a specified accuracy.
SC1:  Calculate the upper and lower bound for simple context.
SC2: Calculate the upper and lower bound for the given context.
SC3:  Apply the knowledge of upper and lower bound to solve
real life problems.

Keywords: Upper bound, Lower

bound, Rounding,
Accuracy, Significant figure
CCL: Business, Engineering,
Science & Technology
A general rule
• To find the upper bound we have to add half of the unit we rounded to for
• And if we want the lower bound, we subtract half of the unit

Example 1 :Upper and Lower Bounds
These numbers are rounded to the nearest 1 decimal place.
Write the upper and lower bounds.

UB: 5.75 UB: 0.45 UB: 14.95

5.7 0.4 14.9
LB: 5.65 LB: 0.35 LB: 14.85
Example2 :Upper and Lower Bounds
These numbers are rounded to the nearest 2 decimal places.
Write the upper and lower bounds.

UB: 0.655 UB: 0.095 UB: 1.075

0.65 0.09 1.07
LB: 0.645 LB: 0.085 LB: 1.065
Example 3 :Upper and Lower Bounds
A mass is given as 5.8 kg to 1 decimal place. Using
limits show the upper and lower bounds.

A number, n, is rounded to 2 decimal places. The result is

3.76.
Using inequalities, write down the error interval for n.

(Real life Application)

1 Mel is drawing a quadrilateral. The length of each side is 6.3 cm to 1 decimal place.
Calculate the limits if accuracy for the length of one side

Calculate the limits if accuracy for the result in his calculation.
