THINGS TO OBSERVE DURING
THE HOLY MASS
The celebration of the Mass, as an
action of Christ and the people of God
hierarchically ordered, is the center of
the whole Christian life for the
universal Church, the local Church and
for each and everyone of the faithful.
(Sacrosanctum Concilium, Chapter 1. No. 1)
BOW TO THE
ALTAR

One is also
supposed to give a
bow of the body
whenever one
passes in front of
the altar
(Ceremonial of
Bishops 72).
GENUFLECT WHEN PASSING BEFORE
THE TABERNACLE
One is supposed to
genuflect whenever
one passes before the
Blessed Sacrament
reposed within a
tabernacle-which
encloses the Blessed
Sacrament.
(General Instruction of
the Roman Missal
233).
OBSERVE PRAYERFUL
SILENCE
“Silence is part of the celebration
and must be observed at all
times” (SC, No. 37). Meaningful
silence is an element in
celebration which must be given
in due place. (SC, No. 23)

*Please refrain from using your


mobile phone during the Mass. Turn
it off or set it in Silent Mode.
PARTICIPATE IN SINGING AND
RESPONDING.
“Mother Church earnestly desires that all the
faithful should be led to the full, conscious,
and active participation in liturgical celebrations
which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy.”
(SC, No. 14)

SINGING MUST BE REGARDED AS
AN ASSET IN ANY CELEBRATION.

of the faithful which most clearly manifests the
ecclesial nature of the celebration (SC, No. 4)
*Saint Augustine said, “Singing is praying twice.”
Sing to the Lord with joy during the Mass.
LISTEN ATTENTIVELY
DURING THE HOMILY
“The Homily is part of the liturgy
and is strongly recommended for it
is a necessary source of
nourishment for the Christian
life.” (SC, No. 41)
*Listen for important points during
the Homily. The Preacher’s
inspiring words may be a source of
guidance as you go through life’s
journey.
AFTER HOLY COMMUNION,
THE FAITHFUL MUST
OBSERVE SILENCE AND
PRAISE GOD AND PRAY IN
THEIR HEARTS.
During the moment, people pray for a
while in silence. (SC, No. 56)
*Observe prayerful silence
especially during Communion. It is a
time most suited for praying for your
personal intentions.
