Triangle Inequalities

This document provides a mathematics lesson on theorems related to triangles. It discusses three triangle inequality theorems: 1) If one side of a triangle is longer than a second side, then the angle opposite the longer side is larger than the angle opposite the shorter side, 2) If one angle of a triangle is larger than a second angle, then the side opposite the larger angle is longer than the side opposite the smaller angle, and 3) The sum of the lengths of any two sides of a triangle is greater than the length of the third side. It then provides examples of applying these theorems to solve for missing angles and side lengths in various triangle diagrams.

Let's make our next discussion more lively by doing
advanced reading about Hinge Theorem and its Converse.
Let’s Have a Review 

What was our Topic Yesterday?

Exterior Angle Inequality

Theorem
The measure of an exterior angle is
greater than the measure of either
remote interior angle.

How can we get the measure of the

Exterior Angle?
Exterior angle is equal to the sum of its remote interior
angle.
Or
Get the value of the angle adjacent/linear pair with the
exterior angle and subtract it from 180º
Suppose an alligator is hungry and decides to eat two fishes of
different size. The smaller fish is the red fish and the bigger fish is the
orange fish. Notice the opening of the mouth of the alligator when it
eats the fishes.

What can you say

about the opening of
the mouth of the
alligator when it eats
the red fish and when
it eats the orange
fish?
Suppose you and one of your friends, Mark, are walking through a
haunted house at an amusement park and you come across a trap door.
You enter first the door and the length of opening is large enough for you
to fit in. Mark, who is taller and larger than you, then goes second and has
to open the door a bit wider so that he could go in. Let’s illustrate the
opening of the doors that you and Mark made.

What can you say

about the two
triangles formed
when you and Mark
entered the door?
Hinge Theorem or SAS Inequality

If two sides of one triangle are congruent to two sides of a second

triangle, and the included angle in the first triangle is greater than the
included angle in the second, then the third side of the first triangle is
longer than the third side of the second.

are used to mark congruent sides.

G J

of the first
the second triangle, then the two triangles are congruent. Short lines (hatches)

Example 3. Given the figure below, write an inequality and
determine
If the three the
sides possible values
of the first triangle of x. to its corresponding sides on
is congruent
the second triangle, then the two triangles are congruent. Short lines (hatches)

are used to mark congruent sides.

G J

𝑅 𝐸>𝐶 𝐴
∠ 𝑅𝐴𝐸 >∠ 𝐶 E 𝐴
H I K L

△GHI ≅ △JKL

∠ A >∠ E
If the three sides of the first triangle is congruent to its corresponding sides on
the second triangle, then the two triangles are congruent. Short lines (hatches)
are used to mark congruent sides.

G J
Since the sum of all the measurement of the angles of
a triangle is 180°, the value of x will not be exceeded
to 180°

So, the value of x

H I K L
should be

Converse of Hinge Theorem or SSS
Inequality Theorem
If two sides of one triangle are congruent to two sides of a
second triangle, and the third side of the first triangle is longer
than the third side of the second, then the included angle in the
first triangle is larger than the included angle in the second
triangle.
Figure 1 has a
greater
measure of
angle.
Example 2: Consider 𝛥𝑀𝑂𝑃 and 𝛥𝑄𝑅𝑆. Which angle
is larger,
If the ∠𝑀oforthe∠𝑆
three sides first? triangle is congruent to its corresponding sides on
the second triangle, then the two triangles are congruent. Short lines (hatches)
are used to mark congruent sides.

G J

H I K L

△GHI ≅ △JKL
∠ 𝑀  > ∠ 𝑆 .
Example 6: Given the figure below, write an inequality and
determine
If the three the
sidespossible values
of the first triangle of x. to its corresponding sides on
is congruent
the second triangle, then the two triangles are congruent. Short lines (hatches)
are used to mark congruent sides.

G J

H I K L

△GHI ≅ △JKL
So, the possible values of x is greater than 4.
