Automated teller machine (ATM)

Is a computerized telecommunications device that provides the

customers of a financial institution an access to financial transactions
in a public space without the need for a human clerk or bank teller. On
most modern ATMs, the customer is identified by inserting a plastic
ATM card with a magnetic stripe or a plastic smartcard with a chip,
that contains a unique card number and some security information,
such as an expiration date or CVC (CVV). Security is provided by the
customer entering a personal identification number (PIN).

Major Components of the Dispenser

 AFD stacker
 Long front load transport 720mm
 Long rear load transport 860 mm
 Dispenser CCA
 When a consumer initiates a withdrawal transaction, the dispenser removes notes or other
dispensable media from the dispense cassettes, stacks it, and transports it through the dispenser.
The dispenser then presents a stack of notes to the consumer through the slot in the fascia.
 If a bank note is unacceptable (for example, too mutilated or crumpled to dispense), or if
multiple notes are picked instead of just one note, the dispenser diverts the note(s) to the divert
cassette.
 If the consumer fails to remove the stack of media, it is drawn back into the dispenser and
dumped into the divert cassette. The terminal is now prepared for the next dispense
Dispenser…

 draws notes (or other dispensable media) from the dispense cassettes,
stacks, transports them to the consumer, through the slot in the fascia.
 Rubber rollers move one bill at a time from the currency box (each holds
about 2,000 bills) to the dispenser area. A sensor determines if two or
more bills are stuck together or if the wrong denomination was pulled
and causes them to be inserted into the reject box.
 If a note is unacceptable (too mutilated or crumpled to dispense), or if a
multiple pick occurs, the dispenser diverts the note(s) to the divert
cassette.
Dispenser…

 Two ways of picking notes out of the cassette

1. vacuum
2. Friction
 Vacuum suction pick the notes out of the cassettes
 Friction use the friction between the notes to pick the notes out of the cassette
 Diebold Opteva 522 use Friction to pick the notes from the cassettes

Cassettes

 Push pallets
 Cassette body
 Lock bar push pallet belt
 Lock bar
 Check the edge of the cassette floor where the AFD pick the notes feel the edge with your finger if you feel any
burrs remove them
 Lower rail configuration
 The rail location within the cassettes are determined not only by the width of the notes but their location also
take in to rapid security furthers of the notes. Having the rail too tight can result in picking problem since the
notes cannot move freely in the cassettes.
 If the rails are blessed to one side or spaced too far apart it could course picking problem
 If the notes are biased too far off the center it would start skewing the notes as they are picked and transported
 Correct coding
 Correct cassette coding is one of the most important factors in AFD performance
 Button coding is important not for only grading the notes as they are picked it is also used when presenting
the notes to the routine is done based on the cassette coding and AFD firmware code
Divert/Retract Cassette and Bin

The cassette has two compartments:

 The divert compartment receives media that was picked, but not presented to the
consumer (for example when multiple notes or mutilated notes are picked).
 The retract compartment receives media that was presented to the consumer, but
was retracted for some reason (for example, the presenter timed out).
 Customer contact points are blue. The divert/retract cassette is available in both
tamper-indicating and convenience versions.
Capacity
 The divert/retract cassette can hold 300 notes in the divert compartment and 100
notes in the retract compartment.
Tamper-indicating Divert/Retract Cassette

 The tamper-indicating cassette is a single-insertion cassette with a red/green indicator. A

single-insertion cassette has a mechanical lockout that prevents the cassette being
reinserted until it is reset with a service key.
 When the indicator is green, the cassette is ready to be inserted into the dispenser.
 When the indicator is red, the cassette is locked and cannot be inserted into the dispenser.
 The red indicator means that the cassette cannot be inserted into a dispenser. Do not
try to insert a tamper-indicating cassette when the red indicator is visible. Failure to
comply with this caution might result in permanent physical damage to the cassette or
to the dispenser.
 Use a service key to open a tamper-indicating cassette and to reset the red/green indicator.
Only authorized service personnel should have access to keys. Be sure you understand the
required procedures and the purpose for those procedures before you handle the tamper-
indicating cassettes.
Removing Media from a Divert/Retract Cassette

 Remove the cassette from the dispenser.

 Open the cassette.
 Slide and hold the partition lock to release the partition
 Rotate the partition up to remove the contents of the retract
compartment.
 Close the partition and make sure that it is closed with the latch.
 Close the cassette lid.
Configuring the Cassette

 There are actuators along the top-front of each dispense cassette (above the tambour door,
where plastic buttons can be added or removed to configure the cassette for the media
that will be dispensed.
 The type of media recorded on the label of the cassette must match the configuration
buttons of the cassette.
Money Quality Standards

 The following conditions are not acceptable to use in the dispense cassette:
• Media joined by any means
• Media with staples or pins
• Media with sticky or adhesive substances
• Media repaired with tape
•Media with tears exceeding 13 mm (0.5 inch)
• Media with holes or missing sections
• Media that is excessively crumpled or wrinkled
• Media with a folded corner exceeding 13 mm
• Media that is bowed more than 3 mm in any
direction
• Media that is deformed by prolonged storage
• Media that is extremely limp.
Unacceptable media can jam the dispenser
Card Reader

 Basic Functions
 The Motorized Card Reader module provides the following basic functions:
 Handling of ISO7810 cards short edge first
 Read/write the ISO7811 magnetic cards
 Read/write the ISO7816 chip cards and memory cards
 Support SAMs
 Predisposition for CIM86
 Can operate mounted horizontally and in the range ± 30° from horizontal
 Can operate stripe-up or stripe-down
Card Reader…

 Mode of Operation

 The card inserted in the entry slot by the customer is conveyed automatically to
the inside of the reader. The slot is provided with a protective shutter, and permits
partial insertion of the card so that the reader can verify its legitimacy. If the
verification is passed, the reader opens the shutter and brings the card inside.
 After security checks the transaction is enabled. At the end of the transaction and
of read/write operation, the card is returned automatically.

 Advanced Skimming Detection is an anti-skimming sensor installed on the card reader to

identify card reader fraud devices
 • Fraud verification. If there is NO fraud device on the reader it is possible to see the LTI
(Lead Through Indicator). If you cannot see the LTI, probably there is a fraud device on
the reader. Remove the fraud

Cleaning a Card Reader

 Cleaning must be done with a cleaning card when the Read/Write error happens very often.
Clean the card reader regularly, every 6 months, in normal condition. The motorized card
reader uses a head cleaning card.
 Place the terminal in the appropriate mode to service the Card Reader.
 Do not use solvents or any other liquids to clean a card reader. Using anything other
than the recommended cleaning cards can damage the card reader.
 To clean the card reader insert the head cleaning card in the front of the card reader. The
card reader, tries to read the card, move the cleaning card over the head performing the
cleaning and finally eject the card. It may be necessary the repeating of the operation
several times.

 A power failure occurs while the card is in the card reader, and the
option to return the card on power failure is not included.
Card Reader …

 The motorized card reader is provided with an Open Retained Card Bin and a Locked Card Bin to store
the captured cards.
 The Bin capacity will be:
 Open Bin: capacity will be 50 non-embossed flat cards
 Locked Bin: capacity will be:
 100 non-embossed flat cards in case of stripe-down card readers.

reasons:
 The network commanded the terminal to retain the card.
 The costumer left the card in the card entry slot too long after the transaction session ended or after a
Power Failure process ended (only when a Enhanced Return on Power Failure device is present).
 The locked retained card bin offers added internal security by limiting access to retained cards. When it is
mounted on the motorized card reader, retained cards enter the bin through the slot on the face plate. To
access the retained cards inside the bin, you must use a service key.

XFS (Extensions for Financial Services)

 With the move to a more standardized software base, financial institutions have been
increasingly interested in the ability to pick and choose the application programs that
drive their equipment. WOSA/XFS, now known as CEN XFS (or simply XFS), provides
a common API for accessing and manipulating the various devices of an ATM regardless
of the manufacturer. Notable ATM software that operates on XFS platforms include
Triton PRISM, Diebold Agilis,CR2 Bank World, KAL Kalignite, NCR Corporation Aptra
Edge, Phoenix Interactive VISTA atm, and Wincor Nixdorf Protopas.
Encrypting PIN Pad(EPP)

 The EPP contains the security processor, the software function, the encryption keys and
memory to locally perform the PIN-encryption function. Any attempt to gain access to the
EPP will destroy the encryption keys; resulting in failure of all subsequent ATM
transactions, until the EPP is replaced and a new set of keys are installed.
 The encrypting circuit may be:
• a microcontroller programmed to encrypt,
• application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC),
• microcontroller with external core with full
 implementation of the Triple DES encryption algorithm Using a cryptographic algorithm,
the EPP performs a variety of operations, including DES (Data Encryption Standard),Triple
DES and MAC (Message Authentication Code).
Cryptographic algorithms DES & Triple DES (3DES)

 The encryption method that has been a national standard since 1977 is DES (Data
Encryption Standard) as described in ANSI X9.8.
 DES uses a single secret key to encrypt the PIN at the ATM and the same key to decrypt
the PIN after it is received by the processor, to verify the cardholder’s identity. A key
consists of 64 binary bits of which 56 bits are usually randomly generated and used
directly by the algorithm. The other 8 bits are not used. The strength of DES has been
called into question because of the limited size of its key. In 1998 a group called the
Electronic Freedom Foundation, using a specially developed computer called the DES
Cracker, managed to break DES in less than 3 days. As general technology increases, so
does the security required for ATM transactions. A new specification, ANSI X9.52, was
developed to use two 64-bit keys (effectively 128 bits) and apply them three times, hence
the name “Triple DES”. The procedure for encryption is exactly the same as single DES,
but it is repeated three times. Triple DES technology offers a significantly higher level of
security. Since it is based on the same algorithm as single DES, it can be introduced into
the existing Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) network with a minimum of disruption.

Combination

 Standard Components
 The following parts are standard components of your Safe Gard electronic lock:
 Round entry pad
 Primary lock
 Round Entry Pad
 The round entry pad contains the two 9-volt alkaline batteries that supply power for the
lock. The entry pad slides over two special shoulder screws that are screwed to the front of
the door. When a digit is entered, an LED flashes and there is an audible beep.
 Primary Lock
 The primary lock, such as the dual-handed swingbolt lock shown in is located inside the
security container. The lock bolt of the primary lock works with the handle (or knob) and
boltwork of the container to lock the container. The entry pad cable connector plugs into the
primary lock.
  Table 2-1 SafeGard Options
CHECKLIST OPTION DESCRIPTION
al combination Dual combination (dual control) requires that two separate combinations be entered to open the
lock. The second combination must be entered within seven seconds of the first combination.

Duress alarm The duress alarm feature is also referred to as an ambush number. If the user enters the last
number of the combination one digit high or low, the lock opens and a silent signal alarm is sent.
This feature requires that an alarm battery box be used and wired into an alarm system.

Remote override signal Two combinations, or a remote signal plus the primary user combination, are required to unlock
the lock. The lock must have an alarm battery box for this feature. If the lock is programmed for
duress and wired into an alarm system, a silent signal alarm is sent when two combinations are
used to unlock the lock.
Remote disable signal With a signal present, the lock is disabled. After you enter the combination at the entry pad, the
unit beeps six times and the lock does not unlock. The lock must have an alarm battery box for
this feature.
Time delay The combination must be entered before the specified time delay period starts. The lock cannot
be opened until the time delay period has expired. When the delay period has expired, the
combination must be entered again within the specified opening window to open the lock. The
standard time delay period is 15 minutes, with a 3-minute opening window. The maximum time
delay period is 99 minutes, and the maximum open period is 19 minutes. The time delay period
and the open period are programmed at the factory or by your service provider.

Time delay override This feature allows the second user combination to override the time delay period at any time.

Remote time delay override When the remote signal is present, the lock unlocks immediately with the primary user
combination. When the remote signal is not present, the lock unlocks on time delay with dual
control, and the lock sends a silent signal alarm if it is programmed for duress.

Manager/clerk This feature allows a primary user (manager) to control the access of another person (second
user, or clerk) to the security product on which the lock is installed. The manager may
temporarily or permanently disable the clerk combination.
Combination…

 Entering a Combination
 The following guidelines apply to entering a combination.
 As you enter each of the first five digits, the indicator LED (Figure 2-1, View A) flashes one time and the entry pad
beeps one time.
 When you press the sixth digit and enter your combination correctly, the LED flashes two times and the entry pad
beeps two times.
 If you enter an invalid combination, the LED flashes three times and the entry pad beeps three times.
 If you do not hear a double or triple beep after you press the last key of the combination, wait 10 seconds before you
attempt to re-enter your combination.
 Entering Incorrect Combinations
 Use care to enter your combination(s) accurately. When you enter an incorrect combination, the entry pad beeps
three times.
 Wrong Try Penalty Period
 Each time you enter an incorrect combination, the entry pad beeps three times. If you enter an incorrect combination
four consecutive times, the lock initiates a wrong try penalty period. The LED flashes and the entry pad clicks at
ten-second intervals during the wrong try penalty period. You are not be able to unlock the lock for about five
minutes.
Combination…

 At the end of the initial five-minute penalty period, you will be able to enter the combination. However,
two more consecutive incorrect attempts will activate another five-minute penalty. Entering a correct
combination resets the wrong try count to four.
 Opening the Security Container Door
 Observe the following guidelines for opening the security container door after you enter the
combination(s):
 Swingbolt lock The lock bolt retracts automatically. Turn the security container handle (or knob) and pull
open the security container door.
 Motor lock Wait for the motor to retract the bolt. Then turn the security container handle (or knob) and
pull open the security container door.
 Knob lock Turn the knob clockwise to retract the lock bolt and hold the knob in this position while you
turn the security container handle (or knob). Then pull open the security container door.
 Pin tumbler lock - Turn the key clockwise to retract the lock bolt and hold the key in this position while
you turn the security container handle (or knob). Then pull open the security container door.
