Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams
of six players are separated by a net. Each
team tries to score points by grounding a ball
on the other team's court under organized
rules. It has been a part of the official program
of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo
1964
 The sport originated in the United States
 In the winter of 1895 in Holyoke,

Massachusetts USA,
 William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical

education director, created a new game called

Mintonette, a name derived from the game of
badminton, as a pastime to be played
(preferably) indoors and by any number of
players.
 Volleyball was called Mintonette because of
its similarity with badminton.
 However, Alfred Halstead later renamed it to

volleyball because the objective of the game

was to volley the ball back and forth over a
net.
 WilliamMorgan invented
volleyball in 1895 he decided to
blend elements of basketball,
baseball, tennis, and handball
to create a game for his classes
of businessmen which would
demand less physical contact
than basketball.
 After an observer, Alfred Halstead, noticed the
volleying nature of the game at its first exhibition
match in 1896, played at the International YMCA
Training School (now called Springfield College),
the game quickly became known as volleyball (it
was originally spelled as two words: "volley ball").
Volleyball rules were slightly modified by the
International YMCA Training School and the game
spread around the country to various YMCAs.
 The first country outside the United
States to adopt volleyball was
Canada in 1900.
 An international federation, the
Fédération Internationale de
Volleyball (FIVB), was founded in
1947, and the first World
Championships were held in 1949
for men and 1952 for women.
 The sport is now popular in Brazil,
in Europe (where especially Italy, the
Netherlands, and countries from
Eastern Europe have been major
forces since the late 1980s), in
Russia, and in other countries
including China and the rest of Asia,
as well as in the United States.
 Today there are more than 46 million
Americans who play volleyball. There are
800 million players worldwide who play
volleyball at least once a week.
 On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College the

first game of "volleyball" was played.

1907
Volleyball was presented at the
Playground of America Convention
as one of the most popular sports
 1916: in the
Philippines, an
offensive style of
passing the ball
in a high
trajectory to be
struck by
another player
(the set and
spike) were
introduced
 1916: The NCAA was
invited by the YMCA to
aid in editing the rules
and in promoting the
sport
 1916 Added to school

& college physical

education & intramural
programs
 1917: the game was

changed from 21 to
15 points
1919 American Expeditionary Forces
distributed 16,000 volleyballs to it's
troops and allies. This provided a
stimulus for the growth of volleyball
in foreign lands
Volleyball is also a
sport at the
Paralympics managed
by the World
Organization
Volleyball for Disabled.
Nudists were early
adopters of the game
with regular organized
play in clubs as early
as the late 1920s. By
the 1960s, a
volleyball court had
become standard in
almost all
nudist/naturist clubs.
Late 1940s Forearm pass
introduced to the game (as a
desperation play). Most balls were
played with overhand pass.
1947, the Federation
International De Volley-Ball
(FIVB) was founded in Paris
1951 - Volleyball was played by
over 50 million people each year in
over 60 countries
1960's new techniques added
to the game included - the soft
spike (dink), forearm pass
(bump), blocking across the
net, and defensive diving and
rolling
• 1964, Volleyball was
introduced to the Olympic
Games in Tokyo (Japanese
gave us the modern
version of the ball)
1974, the World
Championships in
Mexico were telecast
in Japan
• 1975, the US
National Women's
team began a year
round training
regime (men started
in 1977)
1983, the Association of
Volleyball Professionals
(AVP) was formed
• 1984, the US won their
first medals at the
Olympics in Los Angeles.
The Men won the Gold,
and the Women the
Silver.
• 1988, the US Men
repeated the Gold in the
Olympics in Korea
1995, the sport of Volleyball was
100 years old!
• 1996, 2-person beach volleyball
was added to the Olympics
TODAY China,
Brazil and Russia
lead the world
• London hosted
2012 Olympics
• 2nd most popular
sport
in the WORLD!!!
Volleyball is a fast-paced team sport
with two very distinct identities. Indoor
and beach volleyball are both played
on a court. The primary objective in
both indoor and beach volleyball is to
prevent the ball from bouncing in your
team's half of the court while trying to
make it land in the other team's court.
Knee Pads
Volleyball knee pads prevent injuries.
However, a person should choose pads
according to age and experience. For
instance, younger athletes should use thicker
pads, since these players have less
experience diving for the ball. Older athletes
with more knowledge may choose thinner
knee pads. They work well to prevent
bruising and burns. All knee pads must fit
comfortably around the leg area.
contact.
Ankle Braces
The most common injury associated with a
volleyball player is a sprained ankle. To
avoid the problem, it is wise to invest in a
good pair of ankle braces. Since braces
have proven to lower injuries by 40
percent, certain volleyball team coaches
mandate them. They provide stability to the
area without compromising activity. Lace-
up braces guard the sides, front, and back
of the ankles. They are especially
important when setting the ball, at the time
of frequent under-the-net contact.
Proper Footwear
Mens and womens volleyball shoes are
essential gear for the game. These shoes
contain a gum rubber sole to provide maximum
traction. These shoes are designed to protect
the foot during side-to-side movement. The
front padding of the shoes is thick, so the legs
do not suffer pain from continuous jumping. A
smart shoe choice will be made of leather and
contain a low heel. This provides top support
and helps to prevent sprains as well.
Volleyball Duffle Bag
After having the right volleyball gear and
clothing, it is important to have a dedicated
piece of equipment to keep everything
organized and easy to access. The bag should
be simple to carry. Most people prefer a
backpack style, where the weight can be evenly
distributed across both shoulders. The bag
should also contain numerous compartments
and pockets. This will give space to separate
equipment and keep clean items away from
sweaty and used garments.
Sunglasses and Sun Protection
As we have already mentioned that these matches are normally
held under the Sun in an open ground, the players are very keen
on protecting their body and specially their eyes. To protect their
eyes, they wear sunglasses.
But the glasses they put on their eyes should not have any power
in it. This is also a safety guideline for the players. To protect their
body from harsh sunlight, they use sun cream on their body
Ball
The ball shall be round, thick of flexible
leather or made of synthetic leather whose
inside is of rubber or the like. Colors of
brightly colored balls or combination of ball
around 65 - 67 cm and weight 260 - 280 g.
The pressure in the sphere should be 0.30
- 0.325 kg / cm2 (4.26 - 4.61 psi) (294.3 -
318.82 mbar or hPa).
1.The volleyball player equipment is very important
to note. For example, a player's shirt should have
a back number. This is the goal for the player to be
more easily recognizable. Usually the referee
recognizes the players is through the number of
backs that exist on his shirt. But in volleyball
regulations, players' equipment must comply with
the rules. Some of the games for volleyball are:
Player equipment consists of clothes / shirts,
shorts, and sports shoes.
2.Clothes, trousers, and socks should be uniform,
clean and colored together for a team, except for a
libero player.
1.Shirt number:
The player's outfit should be numbered 1 to
18
2.The number should be placed in the center
of front and back
3.The number should be in contrast to the
shirt, measuring 15 cm on the front / chest
and 20 cm on the back / back. The width of
the line that forms the number is at least 2 cm
or greater. It aims to make the numbers easy
to read remotely.
Besides having to use equipment as
mentioned above, there are some objects that
become a prohibition for players to wear them.
Objects that should not be used by players
include:

1. Players are prohibited from wearing objects

that allow injuries such as jewelry, safety pins,
bracelets, bandages from plaster, and others.
2. Players may wear glasses. But the risk
must be borne alone.
3. Players are prohibited from wearing
uniforms without numbers without an official
number or a different color from players in one
team. Unless libero players are allowed to
wear different uniforms. This is to show that
the player is a Libero.
Such restrictions must be observed and
adhered to by volleyball players. If there is a
violation, then the referee may issue a
warning or remove players from the match
court.
Composition and registration of Volleyball
Players
1. A maximum team consists of 12 people, a
coach, an assistant coach, a trainer, and a
medical doctor.
2.Libero players:

One team is entitled to register one defender or

LIBERO, among 12 registered players

of the back of the shirt he wore with the letter
"L".
All volleyball players must be registered.
Including the name and back number are
recorded in the list.

After the team captain and coach sign the

numbers sheet then the players who have
registered should not be replaced
