EXPECTATIONS:
At the end of the module, you should be able to:

1. conduct scheduled or periodic operating system updates on your system unit

2. understand the importance of software updates on the computer system; and

3. identify commonly known Windows update types.

 BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Microsoft Windows or Windows is a widely used operating system in the world. Various
online articles stating that Windows runs on at least 86% of all personal computers in
the world last 2020 with Windows 10 on 47% of them. To keep up with the demand,
Microsoft keeps releasing new updates with upgrades and patches every few weeks.

But updates became only part of Windows with the launch of Windows 98 (1998) with
the use of Windows Update site. But since the released of the latest Windows operating
system starting from Windows 7 (2009) up to 10 (2015). An application called Windows
Update Assistant is used to receive updates and patches in windows.

What is Microsoft Windows Update (WU)?
It is a Microsoft service that enables users to obtain bug fixes and new features for their
version of Windows. Windows Update analyzes a PC's configuration and displays a list of
appropriate downloads for an individual system.

It is available in the Control Panel or Setting feature of the Windows operating system.
The update can be set to automatic, or it can be configured manually to check for updates
weekly. It can be classified as ff.:

● Optional updates are updates to drivers and for enhancing the user experience. It can be installed
manually.
● Recommended updates help in addressing non-critical issues.
● Important updates provide favorable benefits like increased reliability, privacy, and security.

Depending on the settings, it can deliver security updates, service packs and critical
updates. Important updates are usually recommended for automatic installation. It also provides
an update history, which can be viewed by the user to determine what has been installed and
the time of update.

Troubleshooting assistance is also provided for failed Windows updates. Installed

updates can be removed manually, but this action is recommended only when a particular
update is found to be causing issues.

Why Windows Update used for?

● It is used to keep Windows and several other Microsoft programs

updated.

● Often include feature enhancements and security updates to

protect Windows from malware and malicious attacks.

● Access the update history that shows all the updates that have been
installed to the computer through the Windows Update service.

How to Access Windows Update

How you access Windows Update depends on which

operating system you are using:

● Windows 10: Windows update is built-in and a part

of Windows Settings, available from the Start menu.

● Windows 7, 8, and 8.1: Windows update is

integrated as a Control Panel applet and is
accessible from within Control Panel.

Security Updates - are a widely released fix for a product-specific,
security-related vulnerability. Security vulnerabilities are rated by
their severity. The severity rating is indicated in the Microsoft
security bulletin as critical, important, moderate, or low.

Monthly Rollups - a cumulative set of updates that include both security
and reliability updates that are packaged together and distributed over
Windows Update for easy deployment. It is product specific, addresses
both new security issues and non-security issues in a single update and
will proactively include updates that were released in the past. This can be
classified as an “Important” update on Windows Update and will
automatically download and install.

Service Packs/Cumulative Updates - is a cumulative set of all
hotfixes, security updates, critical updates, and other updates.
Additionally, it may contain additional fixes for problems that
are found internally since the release of the product. It may also
contain a limited number of customer-requested design changes
or features.
