Chelation
Chelation
Chelation describes a particular way that ions and molecules bind metal
ions..
Or
The formation or presence of two or more separate coordinate bonds
between a polydentate (multiple bonded) ligand and a single central atom.
Chelation is a chemical process in which a substance is used to bind
metals or minerals so they can be excreted from the body. Chelation has
uses in conventional medicine, such as treating iron overload or severe
lead poisoning. It is used as a complementary treatment for heart disease.
Ideal chelating agents show
• More affinity for metals than endogenous ligand
• High solubility in water
• Resistance to biotransformation
• Form non-toxic complexes with toxic metals
• Accelerate mobilization and/or removal of the metals
• Cheap and easy to administer
• Easy excretion of chelating complex
Chelation for Coronary Heart Disease
Heart disease is the leading cause of death among both men and
women in the United States. Coronary heart disease is the most
common type of heart disease and is responsible for more than
370,000 deaths each year. Treatments include lifestyle changes (such
as following a heart-healthy diet and quitting smoking), medicines,
and medical procedures such as angioplasty.
Some heart disease patients also seek out chelation therapy using
disodium EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid)

Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (calcium
disodium versante) (CaNa2 -EDTA)
EDTA Chelation therapy is a treatment that involves repeated
intravenous administration of a chemical solution of
ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.
Injected intravenously and once in the bloodstream, EDTA traps lead
and other metals, forming a compound that the body can get rid of in
the urine. The process generally takes 1-3 hours.
Has been used extensively in mainstream medical settings to remove
the toxic metal lead from the human body.
EDTA chelation therapy is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) as a treatment for lead and heavy metal poisoning.
It is used to treat acute and chronic lead poisoning by pulling toxins
(including heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury) from the
bloodstream.
