3D Printing

3D printing is a process of creating three-dimensional objects from a digital file by using a 3D printer. It involves building the object layer by layer until it is complete.

WHAT IS 3D PRINTING?

• 3D Printing is a process to make a real life three dimensional

object using a computer created design.
• It is an Additive manufacturing in which material is added
layer by layer to create the desired 3D object.
• It is the opposite of subtractive manufacturing.
Additive Vs Substructive manufaturing
What is 3D printer?

• A 3D printer is a type of fabricating,

industrial robot.
• Unlike an ink-jet printer which can
move only in two dimensions (2D)
the parts in 3D printer can move in
three dimension along three axis
(X, Y & Z).
• It has an extruder which controls
the feeding of the filament.
How do 3D printers work?
• The filament is fed through the extruder (print head) and joined
together on a print surface (print bed) to form an object.
The process to 3D print – step 1
• The first step in 3D printing is to prepare our 3D CAD model. we can
do this using two options :-
1. Creating a 3D CAD model using CAD software like Google Sketchup &
Autodesk Fusion 360
2. Find models online using website like Thingiverse & MyMiniFactory
• The CAD file is then exported to the proper format.
• The stl and obj format are the most common.
The process to 3D print – step 2

• The next step is to slice the 3D model.

• Slicing is the process of converting the digitally created object model
into instruction for 3D printing using slicing software like MakerWare,
Cura & Simplify 3D.
• Most 3D printers can’t build objects using only a CAD-created STL file.
The process to 3D print – step 3

• The last step is the 3D printer building the model by adding the
material layer by layer.
• These layers are joined together to create the final object.

Application of 3D printing

• 3D printing is mostly used in:

• Product development
• Data visualization
• Rapid prototyping

• Specific application includes:

• Architecture & engineering
• Automotive & aerospace
• Jewelry & fashion
• Health & medical

Pros & cons of 3D printing

Advantages Disadvantage

• Bespoke, cost-effective creation • Can have a lower strength than

of complex geometry with traditional manufacturing
• Affordable start-up costs • Increased cost at high volume
• Completely customizable (mass production)
• Ideal for rapid prototyping • Limitation in accuracy
• Allows for the creation of parts • Post-processing requirements
with specific properties • Copyright issues
The future of 3D Printing
• 3D printing is moving in several directions at this time and all
indications are that it will continue to expand in many areas in
the future. Some of the most promising areas includes medical
applications, custom parts replacement and customized
consumer products. As materials improve and costs go down,
other applications that we barely imagine today will become
possible. Perhaps the greatest area of potential growth for 3D
printing is in the medical field. As mentioned above researchers
are just starting to experiment with the idea of creating artificial
bones with 3D printers, but the process could potentially be used
for so much more.
