Chapter 2 Semi-Precision

This document discusses various types of semi-precision measuring instruments. It describes English and metric rules, different types of calipers for measuring inside and outside dimensions, adjustable squares, protractors for measuring angles, bevels, and die maker's squares. Finally, it mentions radius and fillet gages for measuring radii, and angle gages for setting up angles.

CHAPTER 2 : SEMI-PRECISION

MEASUREMENT
INTRODUCTION
 Semi-precision measurement usually refer to
measurement when results do not need to be
more precise than 1/64" or 1/100" ,0.5mm, or 1
degree. this unit will explore several types of
semi-precision measuring instruments or tools
RULES
 Reading English Rules

There are many styles of graduations for English

rules. The most common graduation style divides
inches into 1/8 (one-eighth), 1/16 (one-
sixteenth), 1/32 (one/thirty-second), 1/64 (one-
sixty-four) divisions. When read the rules with
the these graduations, measurement should
always be reduced to lowest terms.

 Reading Metric Rules

Metric rules are graduated in millimeter and one-

haff (0.5) millimeter divisions. Quick-reading
number every 5 or 10 millimeter simplify
measurement
CALIPERS

 Slide Calipers
Slide calipers can be used for measuring outside and inside dimensions.
Graduations are in inches, fractions, or millimeters. As shown above, one side
of the caliper is used to measure outside (1) and the other side is used to
measure inside (2) dimensions. Stamped on the frame (3) are the words “IN’:
and “OUT” (4). You use them when taking inside and outside measurements.
The other side of the caliper is used as a straight measuring rule.

 Outside And Inside Calipers

Calipers are used to measure diameters. Outside calipers measure
outside diameters. Inside calipers measure inside diameters. Simple
calipers are used along with a scale to find the measurement. Slide
calipers and vernier calipers have their own scales.
ADJUSTABLE SQUARES
 The Combination Set
The combination set
 Protractor : used to set an angle or angle
measurement. Measuring range : 0 -180 degree
 Square : used as 90 degree or 45 degree square
accuracy of 90 square
 Rule : used as rule, measuring range 300mm
 Center Finder : used to find the cylinder center
Angular Measurement Instrument

Protractor
protractor is a measuring instrument, typically made of transparent plastic or
glass, for measuring angles. Most protractors measure angles in degrees (°).
Radian-scale protractors measure angles in radians. Most protractors have 2
sets of numbers, the bottom set is for angles that open to the right and the
upper set of the protractor is used to measure angles that open to the left.

 Bevels
an instrument consisting of two rules or arms jointed together
and opening to any angle for drawing angles or adjusting
surfaces to be cut at an angle. the angle that one surface or line
makes with another when they are not at right angles.

 Die Makers Square

Handy pocket size square with sliding blade can be adjusted at an
angle up to 10° with the beam for measuring the clearance in
dies.
FIXED GAGES

 Radius and Fillet Gages

A radius gauge, also known as a fillet gauge, is a tool used to measure

the radius of an object. Radius gauges require a bright light behind the object
to be measured. The gauge is placed against the edge to be checked and any
light leakage between the blade and edge indicates a mismatch that requires
correction.

 Angle Gages

A simplified accurate, quick and direct method for angle set-ups in

tooling, production and inspection.
