• Some of the indigenous research methods that have been identified are pagtatanongtanong (improvised

informal, unstructured interview) (Pe-Pua, 1989), pakikipagkuwentuhan (‘‘story telling’’ or ‘‘informal

conversations’’) (Orteza, 1997), ginabayang talakayan (collective indigenous discussion), nakikiugaling

pagmamasid (participant observation) (Bennagen, 1985), pakikisama (‘‘getting along with’’) (Nery, 1979),

pagdalaw-dalaw (‘‘visiting’’) (Gepigon & Francisco, 1978), and panunuluyan (‘‘residing in the research

setting’’) (San Juan & Soriaga, 1985).


Pakikipagkwentuhan (Definition)

• Pakikipagkwentuhan is an informal, free, as well as a social process of

exchanging information, thoughts, and knowledge that is part of human daily

activities (Oteza, 1997).

• Kwentuhan is an occasion for exchange of information, ideas, and opinions:

It is a sharing of beliefs, thoughts, and experiences (Javier, 2004).

Process of Pakikipagkwentuhan
• 1. Initially make visits (padalaw-dalaw) before living in the community (panunuluyan)

• 2. Introduce yourself to the community (first name basis instead of last name basis)

• 3. Invite yourself to community gatherings

• 4. Initiate a conversation when in a natural cluster

• 5. Invest time in story sharing sessions (Follow natural flow of pakikipagkwentuhan)


Principles of Pakikipagkwentuhan

• 1. May pakikipagkapwa sa kwentuhan

• 2. May “paki” ang kalahok sa kwento

• 3. May pakinabang sa kwentuhan

- Libangan

- Linangan ng kaalaman

- Lunas sa karamdaman
• 4. Collective orientation

(pananaliksik na sama-sama)

• 5. Contains the process of validation

(pagpapatotoo)

• 6. Construction of social reality

(pagbubuo)
• 7. Cluster as unit of analysis (pagsali sa likas

na umpukan)
