SUSTAINABILITY

 Sustainability consists of fulfilling the needs of current generations without compromising the
needs of future generations, while ensuring a balance between economical growth, environmental
care & social well being.

 Sustainability is ability to maintain or support a process over time.

 Sustainability is often broken into three core concepts: Economic, Environmental, and Social.

 Many businesses and governments have committed to sustainable goals, such as reducing their
environmental footprints and conserving resources.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
• Environmental sustainability focuses on the conservation of biodiversity without foregoing
economic and social progress. The foundations of environmental sustainability are: safeguarding
water, saving energy, reducing waste, using recyclable packaging, limiting or eliminating the use of
plastics, using sustainable transport, reusing paper and protecting flora and faun
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
 The main impetus behind the high-performance green building movement is the sustainable
development paradigm, which is changing not only physical structures but also the workings of the
companies and organizations that populate the built environment, as well as the hearts and minds
of the individuals who inhabit it.

 Major forces, such as climate change and the rapid depletion of the world’s oil reserves, threaten
national economies and the quality of life in developed countries.

 Today’s built environment will still exist during the coming era of rising temperatures and sea
levels, however little consideration should be given to how human activity and building
construction should adapt to potentially significant climate alterations

FRAMEWORK FOR SUSTAINABLE
CONSTRUCTION
MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

• Our environment faces several problems, and many of these

seem to be worsening with time, bringing us into a time of a true
environmental crisis. It is therefore becoming increasingly
important to raise awareness of the existence of these issues, as
well as what can be done to reduce their negative impact.

• Some of the key issues are: Pollution, Global Warming, Waste

Disposal, Loss Of Biodiversity, Deforestation
POLLUTION
• Pollution is the introduction of substances or energy that cause adverse changes in the environment and
living entities .

• Pollution need not always be caused by chemical substances such as particulates (like smoke and dust).
Forms of energy such as sound, heat or light can also cause pollution. These substances that cause pollution
are called pollutants.

• Pollution, even in minuscule amounts, impacts the ecological balance.  Pollutants can make their way up the
food chain and eventually find their way inside the human body.
🔥 GLOBAL WARMING 🔥

• Global warming is the result of an increase in magnitude

of the so-called greenhouse effect, a warming of earth’s
surface and lower atmosphere caused by the presence
of water vapours, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide,
and other greenhouse gases.

• Global warming is related to the more general

phenomenon of climate change, which refers to changes
in the totality of attributes that define climate. In addition to
changes in air temperature, climate change involves
changes to precipitation patterns, winds, ocean currents,
and other measures of Earth’s climate.
WASTE DISPOSAL

• Waste disposal means removing, discarding, recycling or

destroying unwanted materials called waste that is
produced from agriculture, domestic usage or industrial
products

• One of the obvious ramifications of mishandling waste

is damage to the environment. It goes without saying that
environmental pollution caused by poor and improper
waste disposal can reap serious havoc on habitats,
ecosystems, air, water, and soil.
LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY & DEFORESTATION
• Biodiversity loss refers to the decline or
disappearance of biological diversity, understood as the
variety of living things that inhabit the planet, its
different levels of biological organization and their
respective genetic variability, as well as the natural
patterns present in ecosystems.

• Deforestation is clearing or thinning of forests by

humans. Deforestation represents one of the largest
issues in global land use. Estimates of deforestation
traditionally are based on the area of forest cleared for
human use, including removal of the trees for wood
products and for croplands and grazing lands.
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES SOLUTIONS
Environmental issues are a matter of concern these days. People are becoming aware of the implication of
environmental degradation in our daily life. It has become important to check the degradation and depletion of
natural resources and pollution, but without halting the process of development. The following are the possible
solution for the environmental issues:

 Avoid single-use plastic  Promote green innovations

 Promoting clean and affordable energy  Conserve water and electricity

 Go for sustainable agriculture  Use reusable products instead of disposable ones

 Reduce food waste  Recycle the waste to conserve the natural resources

 Plant more trees and go paperless  Support local and environment-friendly practices
CONSTRUCTION POLLUTION
Construction pollution is mainly the pollution on the sites of construction and demolition by various construction activities. It
may be in the form of air pollution, noise pollution, water pollution, or soil pollution, depending on the nature of the activities
being practiced at the site.

 Dust Pollution:- Dust pollution on construction sites is a very common and dominating phenomenon. Different kinds of
dust are present in humongous amounts at a construction site. Dust piles are often at the sites from which the winds carry
them and travel to other parts of the city or state, increasing pollution areas in other areas also.

 Emissions from Construction Machines:- A lot of heavy-type vehicles are used during construction that run on diesel.
There are a number of machines like the excavator, crane, bulldozers, and cement mix trailer. This construction machinery
emits a large number of CO2, SO2, and CO into the air.

 Energy Usage:- A large amount of energy usage has been detected at the construction sites, and as we all know,
producing energy causes air pollution. The construction industry has been a user of 40% of the energy used in the world.

 Noise Pollution:- Noise pollution is simply the loud noises caused by the heavy-duty machines, the falling of heavy
material during demolition, and the generators also create a lot of noise. All of this combined makes any construction and
demolition site a hotspot for noise pollution.

 Water Pollution:- Throwing the toxic waste from construction into water bodies causes water pollution. Common liquids
like cement, paint, and glue are some of the things that can be found in the liquid waste at construction sites
MINIMISE ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS FROM
CONSTRUCTION
Increasing Energy Efficiency of Tools Used:- Climate change has put energy efficiency in the spotlight, in a good way. Innovations
in tool efficiencies mean you can now select low energy use tools. You can also track the energy use of individual tools and
machinery on a construction site.

Using Sustainable Materials:- Using sustainable materials can not only limit environmental impacts but can also save your project
money. This can be in the actual price of the materials, but also in the energy savings they provide.
 RECYCLED MATERIALS: USING RECYCLED MATERIALS, SUCH AS WOOD AND METAL

 CEMENT: MADE FROM RECYCLED PLASTIC

 GREEN THERMAL INSULATION: TO REDUCE RELIANCE ON AIR-CONDITIONING AND HEATING

 STRAW BALES: USED TO REPLACE PLASTER AND CONCRETE ALTERNATIVES

Minimising & Disposing of Waste:- It is no surprise, one of those most environmentally damaging side effects of construction is
waste production, with construction and demolition waste contributing to 40% of landfill waste. Having a waste management
strategy in place to minimise this, is an important way to reduce construction environmental impacts.

Safety Procedures to Minimise Accidents:- By having appropriate safety procedures in place, you can hopefully stop damage to
the surrounding environment caused by fire, chemical spills and so on.
