fibers or yarns together to create a

Fabrics can be made from natural

fibers such as cotton, wool, silk, and

linen, or synthetic fibers like polyester,

nylon, and acrylic.

being used in designing
fabrics?
Elements used in fabric design:
• Color: it can evoke emotions and set the tone for a fabric’s
purpose.
• Line: used to create patterns, motifs, or texture. They can be
straight, curved, or organic
• Pattern: repeating patterns that give fabrics their visual
character.
Elements used in fabric design:
• Texture: refers to the tactile quality of a fabric’s
surface.
• Scale: refers to the size of the elements within a
pattern.
• Shape: geometric and organic
Elements used in fabric design:
• Balance: ensures that elements are distributed
evenly throughout the fabric.
• Harmony: refers to the pleasing combination of
elements in a fabric design.

THAILAND
Thai Silk is produced from the
cocoons of Thai silkworm. It is
mainly produced in Khorat which is
the center of the silk industry in
Thailand. Thai weavers from this
region raise the caterpillars on a
steady diet of mulberry leaves.
THAILAND
The patterns in the silk were inspired
by things in the natural world
surrounding the weavers, such as
snakes, flowers, birds, and leaves.
Today, Thai silk making
is considered to be
one of the finest arts in
the world, a product of
unique manufacturing
process and bearing
unique patterns and
colors.
Mat mee patterned silk
is made from a specific
kind of dying process.
It is most commonly
seen in the weaving of
Isaan, or northeastern
Thailand.
Yok Dork is another
kind of pattern that is
woven in Thai silk. It is
a kind of brocade and
often feature an all-
over pattern of flowers.
CAMBODIA
Silk Weaving in Cambodia dates to as
early as first century since textiles were
used for trading. Modern textiles have
traces of motifs imitating clothing details
on ancient stone sculpture.
The are two types of Cambodian
weaving:
1. Ikat Technique
2. Uneven Twill
Ikat Technique – to Uneven Twill – it yields

• Lustrous appearance: shiny
• Lightweight
• Breathability: helps regulate body temperature
Characteristics of silk fabrics:
• Hypoallergenic: less likely to cause skin irritations
• Moisture-wicking: can absorb and release
moisture
• Strong and durable
• Natural fiber
Characteristics of silk fabrics:
• Versatility
• Vibrant colors
• Biodegradable: it breaks down naturally over time
• Dyeability: can be dyed easily
