Helping verbs -the

-ing form of verbs


Objectives:
By the end of this lesson you will be able to,
• Understand the –ing form of verb.
• Understand the helping verbs (is, am, are, was, were) and
their usage with the main verbs.
• Use the helping verbs with the singular and plural subjects.
The –Ing form of verb
As you all know, verbs have different forms.
We add –s, -es, -ed, –d and –ing to a verb and change its form:

for example,
Play: plays, played, playing

love: loves, loved, loving

Let’s look at the sentences with different
forms of a verb
➢ Amna plays with her doll.

➢ Zain played with his football yesterday.

➢ We are playing in the park today.


The –ING form of verb
We add -ing at the end of the verb to change it into the
progressive form.
Examples:
walk + ing = walking
blow + ing = blowing
catch + ing = catching
shout + ing = shouting

Rules to add –ing in the verbs
➢ Some verbs end in –e . In order to add –ing to such a verb we drop
the final-e.

make  (mak )+ ing = making


like + ing > (lik) + -ing = liking
care + ing > (car) + -ing = caring
taste + ing > (tast) + -ing = tasting
bake + ing > (bak) + -ing= baking
Rules to add –ing in the verbs
➢ When – ing is added to some verbs, we double the last letter.
Spin  spinn  spinn+ ing = spinning

Grin + ing = grinn + ing = grinning


Hit + ing = hitt + ing = hitting
Drop + ing = dropp+ ing = dropping
Swim + ing = swimm+ ing = swimming
Adding the helping verbs
➢ A verb ending in –ing cannot be used without the
helping verbs.
➢ Look at these sentences:

• Amjad is writing a letter to his friend.


• They are waiting for the school bus.
• My brother was sleeping when the bell rang.
• I am cooking dinner for the family.
• I am feeling thirsty.
Using the helping verbs
➢ Following are the helping verbs used with the –ing
verbs.
present past
is
am was
are were

• “is” is used in the present
are
• “are” is used in the present tense

• “am” used in the present tense with the
subject ‘I’ only.

• When we talk about our selves we use


“am” as a helping verb along with the –
ing form of the verb.

• am cannot be used with any other


subject. It is also not used in past or
future tense.
➢ I am reading a story book to my younger brother.
was were
• “was” is used in the past • “were” is used in the past tense
