RECORDINGAnalysing and Evaluating DATA - SCI

The document discusses collecting data through repeat measurements, calculating means, interpreting data to draw conclusions, and evaluating data. It provides examples of line graphs and bar charts and discusses using the appropriate graph based on continuous or categorical variables. Axis labels, units, and scales are also covered. Methods of analyzing data such as lines of best fit and comparing results to predictions are described. Evaluating data by discussing data quality and suggesting improvements is also mentioned.

Recording data , analyzing

data , evaluating data

Recording Objectives:

data , To calculate a mean from

analyzing repeat measurements

data , To interpret data to draw

conclusions
evaluating
data To evaluate data
• Collecting data : each time
independent variable changes, Temperature Height of
repeat measurements of their bounce in
dependent variable . cm

Cold 45 40 35
• Mean is a type of average
Warm 50 60 20
hot 65 75 70

• Continuous data – line graph
• Categoric data- bar chart
• Independent variable- X axis
• Dependent variable – Y axis

T
R
An investigation:
U
C 1. Into how the temperature of water affects the time a potato take to cook
T
2. To see if plastic, metal or wooden cups keep drinks warm longest

3. To see if a car’s colour makes it go faster

4. To see if light brightness makes plants grow quicker

5. To find if iron rust faster in different concentrations of salty water

Analysing data
• Line of best fit : line passes through many points possible
• Once you have analysed you can write its conclusion
• Compare your results with predictions
Use information from graph to describe what
happens when you double the temperature of the
water.
Evaluating data
• Two ways to evaluate
• A. discuss the quality of data
• B. Suggest and explain improvements
• Spread : tells how precise the data is
Errors and uncertainty

• Errors :
• Random errors and systematic errors
