Problem solution based

essay
What could be the possible essay
outline? Take 2 minutes to think
about it.
Essay outline
Introduction
Main paragraphs
Conclusion
Introduction
Write your introduction in two sentences:
Sentence 1 - paraphrase the statement (you can use
‘nowadays/today/these days’ to start):

Sentence 2 - say what you’ll write about in your essay:

Body paragraph 1- problems
Sentence 1 - summarize the main problems of inactive
lifestyle:
Sentences 2-3 - state and explain the first problem (you
can also give an example). It’s very important to expand
your opinion! Imagine that your examiner doesn’t know
this subject at all and you have to explain everything in
detail
Sentences 4-5 - describe the second problem (as usual,
expand your opinion). You can give an example and use
linking words ‘moreover’, ’what’s more’ or ‘also’ to start
Body paragraph 2 - solutions
Sentence 1 - briefly state the main solutions:
Sentences 2-3 - write the first solution and explain it:
Sentences 4-5 - describe the second solution (don’t
forget to expand your opinion)
Conclusion
Sentence 6- Summary of main points in paragraphs 2
and 3

Sentence 7- Prediction or recommendation

Tips for writing a well planned essay.
You just need to talk about 2-3 problems and 2-3
possible solutions.
Keep it short and simple.
Common Mistakes
Not expanding your ideas simply listing problem and
solution
Writing about problems and solution directly that are
not linked with the question
Failing to link solution with problems
Some candidates think of really good problems and
solutions that answer the question properly they also
link it with explanation and examples but talk way too
generally.

Candidates use headings

Analyzing the Question
Key words
Micro keywords
Action words
Key words
Key words tell us what is the topic in general
Micro keywords
These identify that which part of the general topic the
examiner wants you to talk about
They often give an opinion, qualify the statement or
talk about a subcategory of the bigger general topic.
Action words
Action words tell us that what the examiner wants us
to do.
Thinking of ideas
Coffee shop method
What is coffee shop method?
Instead of brainstorming or mind-mapping- which
take too much time and lead to irrelevant ideas in my
opinion- you should just pretend you are in a coffee
shop with a friend and they have just asked you a
simple question. In this case, it would be “What are
the problems and solutions associated with sea level
rise on humans?”
Sample questions
Global warming is one of the biggest threats humans
face in the 21st Century and sea levels are continuing
to rise at alarming rates.
What problems are associated with this and what are
some possible solutions?
One problem faced by almost every large city is traffic
congestion.
What do you think the causes are?
What solutions can you suggest?
