Simple Binary Form

Simple binary form consists of two parts, part a and part b, that represent contrasting musical ideas. It originated in folk songs and was later used as an independent musical form or as part of more complex forms. The classification of binary form depends on thematic, tonal, and harmonic factors in part b. Binary forms can include a reprise of part a or contrasting material in part b. The reprise can serve to finish the form, reinforce the initial idea, or provide rhythmic summary. When part b is expanded, it becomes a middle form between binary and ternary. Binary form in vocal music is more freely developed with continuous transitions between parts.

Simple binary form

Simple binary form:

Both parts represent the period form or the similar to the
period (in the second part).

a a1 – there is a presentation and development of the one

musical idea.

a b - there is an opposition of two contrasting musical

ideas.
History:
It was formed in folk songs with dances and is represented in
couplet form (solo and chorus).
From the XVII Century is used as an independent musical form
(song, romance, prelude) or the part of the more complex forms
(e. g. the main theme of Sonata form – Mozart, Sonata #12, I
movement - https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK_owDX5WOE ; as a part in the
cyclic form – Beethoven, piano concerto #4 , Andante - https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0a90vRKLFs ; in Opera as a form
of the Aria - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyAxwgps94s )
Classification:

Depends on of the thematic, tonal and harmonic factors in

the second part;
Through the thematic material there are binary forms with
reprise or without reprise.

 In binary form with reprise there is a repetition of the material

from the first part (the sentence). The middle section is mostly
development type: there are sequences, unstable tonal-
harmonic movements, imitations, sometimes appearance of the
contrasting material – Beethoven, Sonata #10, Andante -

Classification:

In the binary form without the reprise there could be the
contrasting second part in the different tonality – Verdi, opera
“La Traviata”, Prelude - https://

The second part can be the continuous type: Rachmaninoff,
piano concerto #2, the main theme -

Contrasting second part – Chopin, prelude c-moll - https://

Developing second part – Chopin, sonata h-moll - the second
theme -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw4aGcmircA
Functions of the reprise:

Finishing the form -

generating the first part -

reinforcement of the first musical idea - https://

Rhythmical summary - https://

Middle forms:

 When the second part is expanded, there is formed a middle form

between binary and ternary forms:
a b
a a1 b a2
4 4 4 6 (7)
 Beethoven, sonata #2, second part –

 It should be mentioned that in binary form the reprise not exceeds of

the sentence, while in the ternary form the reprise is mostly period.
Binary form in the vocal-choral music:

 Differ from the instrumental music, simple binary form in vocal-

choral music is characterized with the different features: it is more
free-developed, and the moving between parts are more continuous
– for example, Tchaikovsky’s romance “Why?” - https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxTKRDkQlhw

 Sometimes there is a sentence in the first part – Tchaikovsky’s

romance “Only one who knows longing” - https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcY7rgcFhqU
 In the second part there is no elaboration, mostly there is continuous
type of development and is more freedom in the proportions of the
parts.
