Circular Motion

The forces acting on the people are: - Centripetal force towards the center of the circle provided by the floor of the spinning space station. This force causes their acceleration towards the center. - Gravitational force pulling them towards the center of the Earth. - Normal force from the floor pushing upwards to counteract their weight due to gravity. Without the centripetal force provided by the floor, they would fly off in a straight line due to their inertia according to Newton's First Law of Motion. The combination of these three forces allows for their uniform circular motion.

Circular Motion

• Newton said, “A
body in motion will
remain in motion
unless acted upon
by an unbalanced
force.”
Centripetal Motion
• Examples of Uniform Circular Motion
– constant speed.
• Ex- second hand on a watch, loop-the-
loop by an airplane, car going around a
curve on a race track, ball on a string
being swung by your teacher.
Circular Motion
• Can an object be accelerating if its
speed remains constant?
• Yes, because velocity is a vector and as
the object travels in a circle its
direction is changing = a changing
velocity = an acceleration.
• In what
direction is this
hammer thrower
exerting a
force?
• Is the hammer
accelerating?
And if so, in
what direction?
F ? a?
• In order to travel in a circle there must be a
force and therefore an acceleration.
Q -What direction must the force be in?
Q- What direction must the acceleration be in?

and force
vectors
The F word
Formula for centripetal
acceleration
• DEB
• a = v2/r
• Velocity and acceleration are _____related.
• If velocity doubles, acceleration ________.
• The radius and the acceleration are ______related.
• If the radius doubles, acceleration ________.
• Since F = ma
• Then F = ______
