Ring Topology

Ring topology is a network configuration where devices are connected in a circular data path, with each device connected to two others like points on a circle. Data travels from node to node around the ring. Ring topologies are commonly used in wide area and metropolitan networks as backbones to connect customers. Key advantages are reduced hardware needs and ability to span large distances, while disadvantages include slow transmission due to processing at each node and difficulty repairing breaks that disrupt the ring.

RING TOPOLOGY

OBJECTIVES
 Know about the Ring Topology.

 Knowthe Advantage and

Disadvantage of Ring Topology.
WHAT IS RING TOPOLOGY?
 A ring topology is a network configuration in which device
connections create a circular data path. Each networked device is
connected to two others, like points on a circle. Together, devices in
a ring topology are referred to as a ring network.

 A ring network is a network topology in which each node connects to

exactly two other nodes, forming a single continuous pathway for
signals through each node - a ring. Data travels from node to node,
with each node along the way handling every packet.
Where are ring topologies used?
 In wide area networks (WAN)
and Metropolitan area networks (MAN), a ring
topology is used to as the topology for the
backbone (sometimes called a city ring) to
connect the customers. In that case the ring
is used in both directions to have two
distinctive paths to the public switch.
ADVANTAGES OF RING
TOPOLOGY
 An advantage of the ring is that the number
of transmitters and receive can be cut in half,
since a message will eventually loop all of the
way around.
 Offer high bandwidth.
 Can span larger distances.
DISADVANTAGES OF RING
TOPOLOGY
 When a node sends a message, the message
is processed by each computer in the ring. If
the ring breaks at a particular link then the
transmission can be send via the reverse path
thereby ensuring that all nodes are always
connected in the case of a single failure.
 Ring topologies are relatively expensive.
 Difficult to install.
