Pulpotomy in Dentistry
INTRODUCTION 2
The conservation of primary teeth in form and function until their normal exfolia-tion is one
of the fundamental objectives of pediatric dentistry.

A pulpotomy is
a dental procedure that treats infected baby (primary) teeth in
children. This type of infection happens when tooth decay reaches the
pulp inside the tooth. During a pulpotomy, the pulp of the tooth in the
crown (the part of the tooth that is visible) is removed and the pulp in
the root canal is left intact.

RISKS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS 5
A pulpotomy is
very safe procedure and there are no serious risks associated with it.
Pulpotomies should not be performed if the pulp in the root (the
radicular pulp) is not vital. That means that the pulp there should not
be infected and should still be healthy at the time of the procedure.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE
SLIDE 6
Here is how to prepare:
Your child may experience some pain and/or swelling after the procedure. The healthcare
provider will likely prescribe pain medication to help with this.
Your healthcare provider will likely give you instructions on the kinds and
temperatures of food your child can eat for the days immediately
following the procedure. Your healthcare provider will also likely instruct
that your child avoid eating candy or other sticky foods until the
stainless steel crown used to restore the teeth falls out by itself.

PULPOTOMY MATERIALS IDEALLY
SLIDE 6 a pulpotomy medicament should be
bactericidal, easy to use, harmless to
the remaining pulp tissue and the
surrounding structures, should not
inter-fere with physiologic root
resorption, and should be relatively
inexpensive . Needless to say, the
ideal dressing material has not been
found, and studies are constantly
being conducted in both
endodontics and pediatric dentistry
to find such a product. Pulp

PULPOTOMY VS. PULPECTOMY 10
These dental procedures sound similar, but they are done for different
reasons. Whereas a pulpotomy involves the partial removal of a tooth's
pulp, a pulpectomy involves the complete removal of pulp tissue in a tooth
as the first step in root canal treatment.

Preventing the Need for Pulpal Therapy
Preventing the

for may be out of your control, but
preventing cavities is something you and
Pulpal Therapy your family can do.
Limit the decay-causing bacteria in your
mouth by brushing twice a day with
fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily and
swishing with a mouthwash.
Keep regular dental visits so your dentist
can find problems early, when a small
filling may be all that is needed.
