• The Kelee shad (Tenualosa ilisha), Hilsa kelee is a pelagic fish, inhabiting
coastal waters and estuaries.
• Hilsa kelee, called the kelee shad, five-spot herring is a species of shad
native to the coasts and estuaries of the Indian Ocean and the western
Pacific, generally west Bengal and other north East Coasts.
• It’s found on Marine, freshwater, brackish, and pelagic waters, but it also
enters estuaries and able to tolerate quite low salinities.
DISTRIBUTION
• The body of Hilsa is covered by silvery skin with gold and purple
colour spots, although adult fish has no spot. Lower jaws is not
projecting beyond the upper. Caudal lobes equal to the length of the
head.

PROBLEMS OF HILSA FISHIRIES
• FOA said, Hilsa shad (Tenualosa ilisha) stocks are among the stocks
considered within un-sustainable levels which are either fully fished or
overexploited.
• Present estimations showed that the mortality in Hilsa kelee was higher,
and that indicating the state of the stock is un-sustainable and the fishery
of kelee shad should not be increased beyond current levels.
