Managing Cold Chian & Maintenance

Managing cold chain equipment is important for vaccine storage and transportation. There are two main types of refrigeration systems - absorption and compression cycles. Major cold chain equipment includes cold rooms, refrigerators, freezers, cold boxes, vaccine carriers, and ice packs. Preventative maintenance such as cleaning, temperature monitoring, and defrosting helps equipment function properly. Common issues involve dust, ice, electronics, and compressors. Proper maintenance is needed to ensure vaccines are kept at the correct temperature during all stages of the cold chain.

What is Cold Chain?

-Asystem of storing and transporting the

vaccines, at low temperature from the place of
manufacturer to the actual vaccination sites.
-A system composed of equipments & workers
that ensures vaccine Quality, at correct
temperature during storage & Transportation
from manufacturer’s to the point of use.

- -
Type of EPI refrigeration system
1. Absorption cycle appliances
Uses a constant heat source to drive the refrigeration
cycle. The source may be an electric heater, a gas or
kerosene flame, water.

2. Compression cycle appliances

Compression refrigeration uses compressors to drive the
cooling process, is driven by electricity from the mains
or solar energy, and cannot operate on gas or kerosene.
The compressor provides powerful cooling,
approximately four times more than absorption
refrigeration, for the same input of electrical energy.
Importance of cold chain

1- To obtain the vaccines from the

manufacturers with low temperature.
2- Storing and transporting the vaccine.
3- Having information about essential
equipments supply of electricity.
4-Keeping the vaccines at low temperature.
5- Protecting the vaccine from sunlight
exposure.
Major cold chain equipments

• Cold rooms & Freezer rooms

• Refrigerators & Ice-pack Freezers
• Cold boxes
• Vaccine Carrier
• Ice-Packs
• Foam Pads
Different Model Of Solar cold chain

Solar Direct Drive (SDD)

 Trust Company at West 40 SDD
 TCW2000SDD
 TCW2043SDD
 TCW3000SDD
 TCW3043SDD
Different Model Of Solar cold chain

Battery Based Solar cold chain

 Dullas VC-15
 Dullas VC65-2B
Electric(AC) based Cold Chain
 Iceliner MK304
 Iceliner MK314
Type of maintenance
• Preventive maintenance
• Corrective maintenance

1. Routine actions or scheduled maintenance which

keep the device in working order & prevents the
breakdown of equipment known as: preventive
maintenance.
2. Fixing & repairing any sort of mechanical, piping &
electrical device that it worn out or broken known
as: unscheduled or corrective maintenance
“repair”.
Corrective maintenance
Corrective maintenance sometimes called
"repair" is conducted to get equipment
working again.
This maintenance activity covers all activities
undertaken after the equipment break down is
urgent and often most expensive because worn
equipment can damage other multiple parts.
Problems on cold chains fridges

DUST and ICE = 80% of problems

ELECTRONICS = 50% of the problems

Preventive
Maintenance
Daily Maintenance

Take temperature readings from the display and

note down the temperature and the time reading.

Keep the temperature records systematically, Its

suggested that minimum 2 reading should be taken
(in the morning and the afternoon) preferably at the
same hours of each day.

Evacuated drain water daily by opening the plug

during 30s.
Weekly Maintenance

Examine the icepack compartment and check

frost formation ,if necessary defrost .

If its observed that defrosting is required to be

done each week.

Examine the gasket on the lid .any gap between

the cabinet and gasket will allow outside air to enter
and will start frost formation. In such cases the
hinge should be adjusted or the gasket should be
changed.
Monthly Maintenance

Clean the compressor compartment and keep it

free from the dust.

Clean the condenser with the provided brush.

Check for any leakage.

Make sure nothing obstructs the fan blade.

Defrosting

Defrosting is the method used to remove ice formed on the

evaporator
It is done when thickness of about 5mm of ice forms on the
evaporator.
Defrosting procedure
Step 1: Do it in the morning in a day when there is no static
session
Step 2: Prepare a cold box or vaccine carrier lined with
conditioned ice packs.
Step 3: Put a thermometer or fridge tag in the cold box or
vaccine carrier and keep all the vaccines in order.
Cont.

Step 4: Switch off the fridge and leave the door open until the
ice have melted, and then mopped up the water. Do not use
any mechanical or sharp tools to remove the ice.

Step 5: Clean the fridge and dry it with a clean towel or cloth.

Step 6: Return the thermometer or fridge tag back to the

fridge, close the door and start the fridge.

Step 7: Return all the vaccines back into the fridge once the
temperature of the refrigerator attains in between +2 C - +8C.
