ECG Signal Final Project-1

The document summarizes a student project that aims to reduce noise in electrocardiogram (ECG) signals using various filters. The project involves collecting ECG data from a database, applying filters like median, FIR, Butterworth and Gaussian filters, and evaluating which filter most effectively removes noise to obtain clear signals. The goal is to detect heart conditions. The filtered ECG signals could be used for medical diagnosis and clinical applications by providing cleaner recordings of electrical heart activity.

Introduction

 In this project , different type of filters are proposed for

improving the removal of noise in ECG signals.
 This type of filtering procedure is applied to the several
ECG patient signals.
 The ECG signals are collected from MIT-BIH database.
 The ECG is one of the bioelectric signals and it is used to
take the electrical activities of the heart.
Literature Review / Survey

An Electrocardiogram (ECG) records the

electrical signal from the heart to check for
different heart condition.
The signal of the ECG is characterizes by the
PQRS Waveform.
The surface electrodes are used to measures the
ECG signal.
Problem Statement / Hypothesis

 Sometimes Noises are produced through this

surface electrode , that the electrodes are not
placed properly in the patient.
 Noise are also created by touch sensation and
heavy breathing.
 These type of Noises are Baseline wander , Power
line interference , motion artifacts , electrode
contact, and Electromyographic(EMG) noise.
Research Objectives

The ECG signal from MIT-BIH arrhythmia database

may contain artifacts , noise and baseline wanders.
So the main objective of this project is:
 To remove noise or unwanted interference in the
ECG signal to obtained clear signals
 To find which filter is most useful or best for
removing noise in the ECG signals.
Research Methodology

 In this project the method that provides the

removal of noise in the ECG signal and provides
the very effective way to detect the heart diseases
in the patient.
 To remove this noise the filtering process are
used. We are using filters like Median filter ,
Finite impulse response filter (FIR Filter),
Butterworth filter, Gaussian filter.
Applications

 ECG signal after filtering by various filters are used

to records the clear electrical activity of your heart at
rest.
 It provides information about your heart rate and
rhythm, and shows if there is enlargement of the
heart due to high blood pressure (hypertension) or
evidence of a previous heart attack.
 It is used in the field of Medical and clinical Field.
