Visible Light

Visible light consists of the wavelengths within the electromagnetic spectrum that are visible to the human eye. It makes up a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum but contains all the wavelengths that appear as colors. The different wavelengths of visible light correspond to the colors of the rainbow. Visible light is essential for human vision and is also used in technologies like lasers, medical devices, displays and lighting. The sun is the primary natural source of visible light on Earth. Isaac Newton was the first to discover that white sunlight is made of the visible light spectrum using a glass prism.

VISIBLE LIGHT

GROUP 3
VISIBLE LIGHT
• VISIBLE LIGHT WAVES ARE THE ONLY WAVELENGTHS OF THE
ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM THAT HUMANS CAN SEE. IT MAKES
THINGS ABLE TO BE SEEN. THE DIFFERENT WAVELENGTHS OF
VISIBLE LIGHT ARE SEEN AS THE COLORS OF THE RAINBOW: RED,
ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO, AND VIOLET.
VISIBLE LIGHT
• THE LIGHT THAT WE SEE — VISIBLE LIGHT — FALLS SOMEWHERE IN
THE MIDDLE OF THIS "ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM." ALL THE
COLORS WE SEE ARE COMBINATIONS OF RED, GREEN, AND BLUE
LIGHT. VISIBLE LIGHT MAY BE A TINY PART OF THE
ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM, BUT THERE ARE STILL MANY
VARIATIONS OF WAVELENGTHS.
SIGNIFICANCE OF VISIBLE LIGHT
• VISIBLE LIGHTS ARE ESSENTIAL BECAUSE, WITHOUT IT, OUR EYES
CANNOT PROCESS IMAGES, AND WE CAN'T SEE ANYTHING. APART
FROM SIGHT, THERE ARE ALSO MANY OTHER USES OF VISIBLE LIGHTS.
VISIBLE LIGHTS ARE USED TO MAKE LASERS, TREAT MEDICAL
SURGERY, ELECTRONIC DEVICES LIKE TV, COMPUTER, MOBILE
PHONES AND IN ELECTRIC BULBS, ETC.
SUN
• THE SUN EMITS ALL COLORS OF VISIBLE LIGHT, AND IN FACT EMITS
ALL FREQUENCIES OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES EXCEPT GAMMA
RAYS. THIS INCLUDES RADIO WAVES, MICROWAVES, INFRARED
WAVES, VISIBLE LIGHT, ULTRAVIOLET WAVES, AND X-RAYS. THE SUN
IS THE DOMINANT SOURCE FOR VISIBLE-LIGHT WAVES OUR EYES
RECEIVE.
WHO DISCOVERED VISIBLE LIGHT?
• IN 1665, ISAAC NEWTON, THEN A YOUNG SCIENTIST AT CAMBRIDGE
UNIVERSITY IN ENGLAND, TOOK A GLASS PRISM AND HELD IT UP TO
A BEAM OF SUNLIGHT STREAMING THROUGH THE WINDOW. HE SAW
THE SUNLIGHT THAT PASSED THROUGH THE PRISM SPREAD OUT
INTO THE COLORS OF THE RAINBOW - RED, ORANGE, YELLOW,
GREEN, BLUE AND VIOLET.
TRIVIA
TRIVIA
TRANSPARENT, TRANSLUCENT, OPAQUE
• TRANSPARENT – ALL LIGHT PASSES THROUGH
• TRANSLUCENT – SOME LIGHT PASSES THROUGH
• OPAQUE – NO LIGHT PASSES THROUGH
