DRSABCD Action Plan
The DRSABCD action plan is a vital aid in assessing whether a patient has any life-
threatening conditions and if any immediate first aid is necessary

D DANGER – check for danger and ensure scene is safe

R RESPONSE – Check for response: ask name and squeeze shouders
S SEND – Send for help – call triple zero (000) for an ambulance or ask a
bystander to make the call
A AIRWAY – Open mouth, look for foreign material and maintain the airway
B BREATHING – Check for breathing, look listen & feel
C CPR – start CPR 30 compressions:2 breaths. If unwilling or unable to
perform breaths, perform chest compressions only
D DEFIBRILLATOR – Apply Defibrillator (AED) as soon as available. Follow
the voice prompts
How to perform CPR
Danger
Danger refers to checking for danger to
yourself, bystanders & the casualties. List all
the dangers you can see the photo

- Whole in ground
- Smoking Person
- Car crashed into electric tower, which has loose ends
- A car is toppling over
- A biker has fell of his cycle
- Cars are moving into pedestrian
Response
R refers to checking the patient(s) for a response (are they conscious/alive?). What are some
questions you could ask to see if they are alive? (Hint: think back to the CPR video)

- What is your name

- Who am I
- Where are you
- Are you alive
- Can You hear me
Send
S refers to send for help from emergency professional and bystanders who are willing to help.
What number do you call when calling for an ambulance or emergency service?

000 (Australia)
Airways
A refers to checking the patient’s airways for blockages. How can this be done? Why is this
important?

- Open their mouth and check for any physical blockages in their
mouth. If there is anything use two fingers to take it out.
- This is important to make sure when CPR is done that it is easier for
the patient to breathe through the airways.
Recovery position
This is known as the recovery position. Why do you think it is important the patient is lying on
their side, instead of their back?

It is important for the patient to lie on their side

instead of their back because the rib cages aren’t
pushed towards the lungs, meaning it is easier to
breathe due to less gravitational force. Also, if they
vomit it would go onto the side and not be stuck in
thei
Breathing
B refers to Breathing, it is important to check if the patient is breathing. What can we do to see
if they are breathing?

1. Listen if they are breathing

2. Feel their pulse if they are breathing

3. Hold water against in your hand against their

mouth to check if the water moves, meaning they
are breathing
CPR
C refers to CPR, CPR is only performed on people who are unconscious (not breathing). What is
the compression ratio for CPR?

100-120 Compressions a Minute

How deep do you compress the chest? (either a fraction or in cm)

3-4 CM
Defibrillator
D stands for a Defibrillator. A Defibrillator is a device that shocks the heart back into life. It will
give clear verbal instructions. Why do you think it is important that you follow the instructions
very carefully?

It is very important to follow the instructions as very bad

things can happen if not followed. For example, if the
patient has clothes on it can severely burn them due to the
shock given, travelling through the metal. It is important to
follow as the shock given through the defibrillator can do
great saving but also harm one.
