 The term 'international' relations was coined by Jeremy Bentham in his 1789 book
Principles of Morals and Legislation.
 International Relations VS international relations
 IR : Discipline that studies international relations

 International Studies, Global Studies, International Affairs, or Global

 International studies explores the social and cultural aspects of countries.
 International Politics: deals only with the political relations of states
 Global Studies/Global Affairs is an interdisciplinary program providing students the
opportunity to develop their knowledge of the world and the major contemporary issues

 There is no specific definition of international relations.


 Experts have defined it on their own perspectives, often considered synonymous to
International Politics and World Politics
 Palmer and Perkins :“International Relations is the objective and systematic study of
international life in all its aspects”.
 Hans J Morgenthau used the term International Politics: “Struggle for power among
nations.

International Relations basically “concerns the relationship among the world’s governments”
 Jackson and Sorensen
“at one extreme the scholarly focus is exclusively on states and inter-state relations; but at
another extreme IR includes almost everything that has to do with human relations across the
world. Therefore, IR seeks to understand how people are provided or not provided, with the
basic values of security, freedom, order, justice and welfare”.

 International relations (IR), International studies (IS) or International affairs (IA) is


the scientific study of interactions between sovereign state
 The scientific study of the interconnectedness between state actors and non –state actors
in terms of Politics ,Security ,Economy ,Law and society etc.
 Discusses international events and world issues between states
Significance of IR

 There is no state in the world today that is completely self-sufficient or isolated from
others.
 It is not possible to solve the problems of a country in isolation or to meet the growing
needs of different kinds.
 Directly or indirectly dependent on the other: Interdependence
 ‘International Relations’ has been created for the purpose of discussing in detail how to
establish peace and prosperity in the world through cooperation, avoiding conflicts, wars,
etc.

 Inspires people towards the possibility of international society.
