Check of Ratio and Polarity of CT

The document discusses checking the ratio and polarity of built-in current transformers. It notes that this check is considered a routine test according to IEC and IEEE standards. It describes the types of current transformers that are tested as bushing type and bus duct type, which use a fiber glass tapped ring construction. The purpose of the ratio measurement is to check that the turns ratio complies with the rating, which is done using a current injection method by measuring the output current on the secondary for a given primary injecting current.

Check of ratio & polarity of

built-in current transformer

CENTRAL POWER RESEARCH INSTITUTE, INDIA

Relevant Standards
Check of Ratio and Polarity of built-in current
transformer is considered a routine test in IEC and
“Other test” in IEEE, the relevant standards are:

 IEC 60076-1, Power transformers – Part 1:

General
 IEEE C57.13.1, IEEE Standard for Instrument
Transformers

Type of CTs
 Bushing Type CTs
 Bus Duct Type CTs

These CTs are fiber glass tapped Ring type

construction & can be mounted on Bus duct
or Bushing turret of power transformer.
These CTs are widely used by transformer
manufacturers for use in oil.

Application
¤ Suitable for oil immersion
¤ Metering functions (including
revenue billing)
¤ Protective relay operation
(differential, over-current)
¤ As a winding temperature
indicator current source
¤ For line drop compensator control

Purpose of Measurement
 To Check the turns ratio of a current transformer.

Test Method:
• The check is carried out by the “CURRENT INJECTION
METHOD” using the test connection shown in figure.
• The test is carried out by injecting current on the primary
and measuring output on the secondary.
• Any other current transformer that may be in series with the
transformer under test should be short circuited.

Test Method (Contd.):
 The ratio of the current transformer should be in
accordance with the rating plate, the secondary
current is obtained by the formula given below:

Where Is = Current output measured on secondary

Ip = Primary injecting current
a = Ratio of current transformer under test

Acceptance Criteria:
 The ratio measured should comply with the rating.
