El Nino

El Niño is a climate pattern characterized by warmer than average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific ocean. This warming causes a weakening of the typical eastward-blowing trade winds, resulting in decreased rainfall over Indonesia, northern Australia, and India, while increasing rainfall over the tropical Pacific. Strong El Niño episodes can cause severe drought conditions in the Philippines, negatively impacting agriculture, water supplies, hydropower production, and overall socioeconomic conditions. The effects of the 1997-1998 El Niño, which had one of the highest Oceanic Niño Index measurements on record at 2.3, were particularly damaging in many parts of the Philippines.

EL NIÑO

EL NIÑO
• The term El Niño means “little
boy” in Spanish
• According to PAG-ASA, El Niño will
continue at the end of year or
even first quarter of the following
year.
• El Niño happens when surface
water becomes warmer than
average and the east wind blow
becomes weaker than normal.
• This phenomenon is characterized
by extreme climatic conditions;
extreme temperature rise with a
little rainfall.
El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) - it’s a atmosphere
disturbance and recurrent warning. This warning
shows about the possibility of killing many sea birds
and fish.

• It’s one of the important climate phenomena on

Earth.
Normal Conditions
El Niño Conditions
This warming alters
the atmospheric
circulation, causing rainfall
to decrease over
Indonesia, India, and
northern Australia while
increasing rainfall and
tropical cyclone formation
over the tropical Pacific
Ocean.
When this
warming occurs for
seven to nine months,
it is classified as El
Niño "conditions";
when its duration is
longer, it is classified
as an El Niño
"episode".
During strong El Niño episodes, a
secondary peak in sea surface temperature
occurs across the far eastern equatorial
Pacific Ocean.
The Effects of El Niño in the Philippines
1. The Philippines has experienced six years of crop drought in 1977-
1978, 1978-1979, 1982-1983, 1990-1991 which cuase a decrease in
agricultural products.
2. According to Leoncio Amador, director of the Philippine Atmospheric,
Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the
1997-1998 El Niño couild be the climatic event of the century.
3. In the Philippines the different areas seriously affected were Region
1, II, III, IV, VI, VII and XI.
4. The El Niño-related droughts in the Philippines affect water sources,
agriculture, hydropower generators, health and sanitation and socio-
economics conditions.
1. Change in the surface temperature
2. Lack of water supply
3. Arid Lands
4. Dry irrigation
5. Poor harvest
6. Poor fish catch
7. Bad effect on animals and plants in the environment
The Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) - tells about the measures about sea
surface temperature in the Tropical Pacific.
• Primary index tracking of ENSO or ENSO climate pattern.
- This picture illustrates about the El Niño happen in 1997-1998.
Having a 2.3 (ONI) as one of the most powerful events in recorded
history.
