CA Introduction 2020 Final

This document provides an introduction to clean air technology. It discusses Johnson Matthey's clean air portfolio, which includes gasoline and diesel exhaust systems for light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. The document notes that the data was collected in Johnson Matthey's laboratory, which has not been certified to perform emissions testing, so the results are only indicative and not a guarantee of passing emissions legislation. It also outlines the constraints of normal engine operation and potential future directions for clean air and emissions reduction.

Gasoline

• TWC Three Way Catalyst: oxidize pollutant from exhaust gases (CO,
HC & NOx).

• GPF – Gasoline Particulates Filter: filter soot emitted from the engine
+ additional conversion functionality – low loading of Pd & Rh.

Reduces NOx:

Diesel – Oxidation

• DOC – Diesel Oxidation Catalyst: designed to convert carbon

water. Pt & Pd based. Low loadings for HDD slightly higher for LDD.

• CSF – Catalyst Soot Filter : filter soot emitted from the engine +
additional conversion functionality.

• SCR (with urea): reduce Nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen and
water. JM manufactures SCR coatings with copper, iron and
vanadium based materials

• SCRF®: NOx/soot conversion/filtering. Warms up more quickly than

an SCR downstream of a CSF (due to its closer proximity to the
engine) enabling earlier NOx conversion. Cu based.
