1 Cond and Evap

Here are the steps to solve this problem: 1. Given: - Refrigerant: R-12 - Capacity: 25 TR - Condenser temperature: 48 °C - Water inlet temperature: 28 °C - Water outlet temperature: 34 °C - Number of tubes: 35 - Tube arrangement: (2,3,4,3,4,3,4,3,4,3,2) - Tube diameter: 10 mm ID, 12 mm OD - Tube wall temperature: 40 °C 2. Calculate the condenser heat load: - 1 TR = 3.517 kW - Capacity = 25 TR - Heat

Condenser and Evaporator

 A condenser is a heat exchanger where the refrigerant is first de-
superheated and then the saturated vapour condenses into liquid
state. The liquid may also be subcooled in some condensers. This is
an important part of the refrigeration cycle without which the
refrigerant cannot be recycled. This is the component where the
heat absorbed by the evaporator at low temperature and the work of
compression are rejected to the surroundings as heat transfer. The
heat is rejected either to air directly or to water which in turn rejects
it to the surroundings in a cooling tower.
Classification of Condenser
a) Air-cooled condenser
1. Natural convection type:

* Wire tube condenser

2. Forced convection type:
* Finned tube condenser
b) Water-cooled Condenser
1. Double pipe or tube-in-tube type:
2. Shell – and–coil type
3. Shell-and-tube type
Classification of evaporator
a) Air-cooled evaporator
1. Natural convection type:

* Plate evaporator
2. Forced convection type:
* Finned tube evaporator
b) Water-cooled evaporator
1. Double pipe or tube-in-tube type:
2. Shell – and–coil type
3. Shell-and-tube type
c) Flooded evaporator
d) Dry expansion evaporator

HW/

Condenser is to be specified for a refrigerant (R-12) that

provides capacity (25 TR), and the condenser temperature is 48
o
C at design condition. Water from cooling tower enters the
condenser at 28 oC and leaves at 34 oC. A two pass condenser
with 35 tubes, arranged as (2,3,4,3,4,3,4,3,4,3,2),and the ube
temperature is 40 oC The tube diameter is 10 mm ID and 12 mm
OD. Calculate the length of the tube required.
