LAGUNA
Laguna, like many provinces in the Philippines, has colorful and vibrant traditions,
customs and cultures. Over the years, the province has shown a resolute desire to respect
its habits and customs. This is reflected in the preservation of its churches, the
continuation of their annual festivals and the continued practice of their traditions by the
younger generation. Indeed Laguna is one of the best places in the country to celebrate
culture and tradition.
History of Laguna
• Laguna is a province of the Philippines located in the CALABARZON region in Luzon.
Its capital is Santa Cruz and it is found south-east of Metro Manila, southern province
of Rizal, west of Quezon, north of Batangas and east of Cavite.
• Laguna de bay, which is the largest lake in the Philippines, is almost surrounded by the
whole province due to its covering surface of 900 sq. km stretching over the provinces
Rizal and Laguna.
• History The Province of Laguna was named after Laguna de Bay, the body of water that
forms its northern boundary. Laguna de Bay, in turn, was named after the town of Bay
(Laguna de Bay is Spanish which means "Lake of Bay"), the first provincial capital.
• The province got its name from the Spanish word "lago", which means lake.
Norms
• Norms are the unspoken guidelines for how people in laguna behave as an individuals
within their culture. Respecting the Elders are the most common thing to do in Laguna,
as well as the other places.
• There is a meaning behind the “Mano Po” since for the most parts are touching the back
of the hand once but touching it twice has its meaning. Touching it twice means by
representing the other behalf of the family when one or more family members are not in
the presence.
Beliefs
• There are set of values that people and groups believed in are referred to as beliefs.
Roman Catholicism is the most common religion in Laguna while INC (Iglesia Ni
Cristo), and other religious churches are few.
• Filipinos also have a belief in the concept of “Awa” or roughly means by Compassion
for others. Awa can mean compassion, grace, sympathy, charity or pity. The meaning of
awa varies slightly depending on the context, but as a community value, it means
compassion for others. Out of our hearts for others, we give everything we have even
when we need help. A prime example is the proliferation of community food pantries
across the country during the pandemic.
Practices
• The norms and traditions that uphold on a daily basis are referred to as practices. Every
practices comes to what fiesta are they holding based on which town we lived in. Each
fiestas last for couple of days or longer to celebrate their traditions.
• Cuisines plays a significant role in Laguna and always comes with a variety of delicious
foods such as Adobo, Bulalo, Menudo, etc. These meals are offered at special
occasions, fiestas, and other elses.
Municipals In Laguna
In Laguna, there are 24 municipalities in Laguna. Each municipalities has its own Norms,
Beliefs, and Practices.
Calamba
• Calamba, officially the City of Calamba, is a 1st class component city in the province of
Laguna, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 539,671
people. Calamba is the regional center of the Calabarzon region.
• Calamba’s barangay, Southwestern Poblacion, celebrates SINULOG FESTIVAL
annually (every second week of the month of January) in honor of Senior Santo Niño.
During this momentous event, barangay officials together with parishioners, devotees,
participants, guests and neighboring localities join forces in honoring the Patron Saint.
Individuals wear varicolored attires and with them are small statues of the Saint while
dancing to the beat of instruments.
Calauan
• Calauan, officially the Municipality of Calauan, is a 2nd class municipality in the
province of Laguna, Philippines. The municipality has a land area of 25.25 square miles
which constitutes 3.41% of Laguna's total area. According to the 2020 census, it has a
population of 87,693 people.
• Calauan is known for the Pineapple Festival, which is celebrated every 15th of
May.

An annual event which started in 1999. The festival aims to promote pineapple and
other agricultural products of Calauan. It features cultural presentation and exhibit
performances, mardi gras, street dancing, pineapple float parade, pineapple and native
products decor contest.
Lumban
• Lumban, officially the Municipality of Lumban, is a 3rd class municipality in the
province of Laguna, Philippines. It can reach this town Passing Through Rizal Province
via Manila East Road or SLEX. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of
32,330 people.
• The Burda Festival was held from September 19 to 23, 2018. The first day marked the
opening of trade fair booths, which were designed by the town’s “barangays.” There
was also a lively street dancing competition, followed by a spectacular fireworks
display in the evening!
Santa Rosa
• Santa Rosa, officially the City of Santa Rosa, is a 1st class component city in the
province of Laguna, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of
414,812 people. It is the second largest local government unit in Laguna after Calamba.
• Every 18th of January the people of sta. rosa celebrates its annual Sikahayan Festival.
• Festival is also held in conjunction with Santa Rosa’s Founding Anniversary as a
separate and independent town in the Province of Laguna 221 years ago. The theme for
this year’s sikhayan festival is “ Pagsiskhay ng mamayanan, tungo sa Pagunlad ng
Payamayanan. The Parade and the street dancing are among the highlight of this event.“
Los Baños
• Los Baños, officially the Municipality of Los Baños, colloquialy 'elbi' or simply LB, is
a 1st class municipality in the province of Laguna, Philippines. According to the 2020
census, it has a population of 115,353 people.
• Bañamos Festival is a toast to the hot spring bath of Los Baños coinciding with the
founding anniversary of the Municipality of Los Banos, which features science
discovery exhibit, beauty pageant, street dancing competition and Makiling Quest
Adventure Race.
• Bañamos is an annual festival that is truly unique to Los Baños. It showcases a shower
of nature’s bounties and scientific discoveries.
Conclusion
The province of Laguna has its own beauties and sceneries with their cultures and
traditions that passed down to each generations. Each municipalities has its own norms,
beliefs, and practices that reflects its history and cultural heritage.

Respecting the Elders, and learning histories of cultures are also the prevalent across
municipalities, including the cuisines, cultural festivals, and historic landmarks.

The bottom line is that each norms, beliefs, and practices of Laguna and municipalities
are the tribute to develop more creativities that soon will ensure passed down to the future
generations.
