Measures of Variability.2023

Here are the steps to solve this problem: 1. Find the range: Upper class boundary of highest interval = 549 + 0.5 = 549.5 Lower class boundary of lowest interval = 100 - 0.5 = 99.5 Range = 549.5 - 99.5 = 450 2. Calculate mean: Mean = ΣfX / Σf = (2*525 + 3*475 + 450 + 3*375 + 4*325 + 14*275 + 12*225 + 21*175 + 10*125) / 70 = 25,250 / 70 = 360 3. Calculate variance: Variance = Σf(X - x

Measure of Variability

A measure of variability is a summary statistic that represents the

amount of dispersion in a dataset. How spread out are the values?
While a measure of central tendency describes the typical value, measures
of variability define how far away the data points tend to fall from the center
Measure of Variability of Ungrouped Data
Range
Mean Deviation
Standard Deviation
Range is the simplest measure of variability. It is the
difference between the largest value and the smallest
value.
Range = Highest Value – Lowest value

Given the Prelim Test Scores 22,23,20,19,18,22,29, 3. Find the Range.

The Mean Deviation
The dispersion of a set of data about the average of these
data is the average deviation or mean deviation.
Formula:

M.D =
Where: M.D is the mean Deviation
x is the individual score
is the mean
N is the number of scores.
is the absolute value of the deviation from the mean.
Steps in computing the mean deviation

1. Find the mean.

2. Find the absolute difference between each score
and the mean
3. Find the sum of the differences and divide it by N.
Example 1:
Find the mean deviation of the following data: 12, 17 13, 18, 18 15 14, 17 ,11

Example 3. Find the Mean Deviation of the weights in kilogram of 10 students
52,54,55,56,54,58,59,57,54,55.
X
Like the Mean Deviation, Standard Deviation
differentiates sets of scores with equal averages.
But the advantage of standard deviation over
mean deviation is that it has several applications
in inferential statistics

Measures of Variability for
Grouped Data
Range of Grouped Data
Range is the simplest measure of variability. The
range of a frequency distribution is the difference
between the upper-class boundary of the top interval
and the lower-class boundary of the bottom interval.

Range = Upper Class boundary of the highest interval –

Lower Class boundary of the lowest interval

Example: Solve the Range

Scores (f)
Upper Class Boundary of the Highest Interval = 44 + 0.5
40 -44 2
35 - 39 3
Lower Class Boundary of the Lowest Interval = 10 - 0.5

25 - 29 14
Range = 44.5 – 9.5
20 - 24 16
15 - 19 5
10 - 14 2
The Variance of Grouped Data ()
Variance is the mean of the square of the deviations from the mean of a
frequency distribution. For large quantities the variance is computed using
frequency distribution.
Formula to find variance of grouped data:

σ
2
=
∑ 𝑓 ( 𝑋 − 𝑥)
2

∑ 𝑓 −1
Where: f class frequency
X class mark
class mean
total number of frequency
Standard Deviation (s)
The standard Deviation is considered the best indicator of the degree of
dispersion among the measures of variability because it represents an average
variability of the distribution.
To get the value of SD (s) , get the square root of the variance (σ)

𝑠 =√ σ 2
Find the variance and Standard Deviation of the given data set:
