Jet, the eldest daughter, for a
while had been most successful until
her husband went to hospital. It was
her idea to give Grandfather a Bible
with gold-plated clasp, while each
of the grandchildren should give him
some inconsiderable trifle.
Dirk was six years old younger than his
sister. He thought little of Jet’s proposal:
“If Grandfather have a new bible with
gold clasp, he wouldn’t continue to use
the old Bible he had always read with his
wife.” His idea was to buy an armchair
in the furniture store, where the prices
had been reduced twenty percent.
Besides, the chair in which he read his
newspaper over the window was wreck.
Mary was a second daughter and she
didn’t like the idea of the armchair.
“If the whole family would give him
a present, it should be something
useful and not stupid.” she said.
Now, a winter coat, a muffler, a
pair of gloves, or some good stool
slippers-these could be practical and
not nearly expensive.
Piet and Frans made greatest fuss of
all and were irrevocably set against
the Bible, the armchair, and the
winter coat. They had grandiose
notions and spoke of decorating the
living room with bunting and
spruce while Grandfather was
asleep, and figured up the cost of a
generous supply of raisins and
brandy and gin.
Henk was the youngest son. It was
his idea to give the old man a
photograph of the entire family.
That would be fine for everybody.
After some discussion, this proposal
was accepted. And the next day, they
all went to the photographer’s and
posed.
What gift did Jet, Dirk, Mary, Piet,
Frans, and Henk want to give to
their grandfather?
Nobody had expected that the
photographer would ask for a cash
payment, but he knew Dirk well, he
insisted: Dirk will pay him two
guilders on account and promised that
the picture would be ready
Wednesday morning at ten o’clock.
The whole family kept secret from
Grandfather. But later, they were
disappointed when they realized that
others had revealed the secret. Now
that it was no longer a secret,
everyone agreed that the photograph
was the best present better than a
Bible, a chair, or a coat.
Tuesday evening after Grandfather
had retired, Dirk, Piet, and Henk
decorated the living room in grand
style. In order that the old man
shouldn’t suspect what they were
doing they worked silently. On the
morning, they were all dressed in
their finest.
They had to keep grandfather
upstairs until the photograph should
arrive at ten. The photographer
promised to deliver it on time. Then,
Grandfather’s footsteps were now
heard upstairs pacing back and forth.
On the stroke of ten, Dirk stepped
into the little garden from the street,
but his arm is empty and his
countenance was woeful.
The photographer charge the bill on
the delivery of the photograph. They
don’t have enough money to pay it. It
became the conflict between them. In
the midst of quarrelling the door
squeaked, and Grandfather appeared.
Everyone showed respect and
greeted him. He sat in the decorated
armchair and thank them in a
trembling voice for their
thoughtfulness while he nodded his
head. From his grandchildren, he
heard simultaneously the history of
the tragic outcome and the
unspeakable turpitude of the
photographer.
But toward evening happiness was
restored; in order not to disappoint
his numerous sons and grandchildren
and dim the glory of their intended
gift, Grandfather himself made up
the balance of the sum that was
owing.
