What is user interface (UI)?
● The user interface (UI) is the point of human-computer interaction and
communication in a device.
● This can include display screens, keyboards, a mouse and the appearance of a
desktop.
● It is also the way through which a user interacts with an application or a website.

Key Qualities of user interfaces
1. User-centered Interfaces. User-centered Interfaces are a fundamental quality of good
UI design. ...
2. Easy-to-understand Navigation. ...
3. Clear and Concise. ...
4. Consistency. ...
5. Interactions. ...
6. Intuitive. ...
7. Proactive Interface. ...
8. Simple Language and Terminology.

The importance of Good User interface design
8
The importance of Good User interface design
● A well-designed interface and screen is terribly important to our users. It is their
window to view the capabilities of the system.
● It is also the vehicle through which many critical tasks are presented. These tasks
often have a direct impact on an organization's relations with its customers, and
its profitability.
● A screen's layout and appearance affect a person in a variety of ways. If they are
confusing and inefficient, people will have greater difficulty in doing their jobs
and will make more mistakes.
● Poor design may even chase some people away from a system permanently. It
can also lead to aggravation, frustration, and increased stress.
9
Benefits of good Interface design
10
Benefits of good Interface design
● ACQUISITION OF NEW CUSTOMERS:
- Contributes to a positive user experience,
- customers feel more comfortable while using your application,
- attract new customers and consequently increase sales.
● INCREASED CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT AND RETENTION:
- Good Design avoid user frustration and increase the retention ration
● BRAND LOYALTY:
- Increase the customer retention and thus increase the loyalty about your application or site
● INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY:
- Search time will decrease, and users will fulfill their needs in a faster and more efficient way
● LOWER DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING COSTS
- Fewer problems for designers, avoiding additional costs and reducing time and effort.
● LOWER CUSTOMER SUPPORT COSTS
- Minimizes the occurrence of errors and unnecessary operations

History of Screen Design
● Developers have been designing screens since long back since a cathode ray tube display was first attached to a computer
● But the principles to screen design did not begin to emerge until the early 1970s, when IBM introduced its 3270 cathode ray tube
text-based terminal
● A 1970s screen often resembled the one pictured in Figure.
● Cluttered look
● Effectively using this kind of screen required a great deal of practice and patience.
● Most early screens were monochromatic, typically presenting green text on black backgrounds.
12
History of Screen Design
● At the turn of the decade guidelines for text-based screen design were finally made widely available and
many screens began to take on a much less cluttered look through concepts such as grouping and
alignment of elements
● Clear and meaningful field captions and Messages also became clearer
● Design principles did not change, groupings and alignment, for example ,Borders were made available to
visually enhance groupings and buttons and menus for implementing commands replaced function keys
13
History of Screen Design
The advent of graphics yielded another milestone in the evolution of screen design
Borders were made available to visually enhance groupings and buttons and menus
Multiple properties of elements were also provided, including many different font sizes and styles, line thicknesses, and colors.
The entry field was supplemented by a multitude of other kinds of controls, including list boxes, drop-down combination boxes
New controls were much more effective in supporting a person's memory ; selection from a list instead of requiring a
remembered key entry
Result was even greater improvements in the user-computer screen interface as the new century
