Difference of Repair and Alteration
A REPAIR IS MAINTENANCE THAT TAKES PLACE TO RESTORE A TYPE-
CERTIFICATED PRODUCT TO "CONDITION FOR SAFE OPERATION."
AN ALTERATION IS MAINTENANCE THAT IS PERFORMED THAT ADDS
TO AND/OR REMOVES FROM THE TYPE-CERTIFICATED PRODUCT'S
CONFIGURATION.

• HAVING NO APPRECIABLE AFFECT ON THE WEIGHT,
BALANCE, STRUCTURAL STRENGTH, POWERPLANT
OPERATIONS, FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS OR OTHER
CHARACTERISTICS AFFECTING THE AIRWORTHINESS OF ANY
AIRCRAFT.
• AN ALTERATION OTHER THAN MAJOR ALTERATION.

OF THE FOLLOWING TYPES, INVOLVING THE STRENGTHENING,
REINFORCING, SPLICING, AND MANUFACTURING OF PRIMARY
STRUCTURAL MEMBERS OF THEIR REPLACEMENT, WHEN
REPLACEMENT IS BY FABRICATION SUCH AS RIVETING OR WELDING,
ARE AIRFRAME MAJOR REPAIRS.

• (4) SERVICING LANDING GEAR WHEEL BEARINGS, SUCH AS CLEANING AND
GREASING.
• (5) REPLACING DEFECTIVE SAFETY WIRING OR COTTER KEYS.
