SOCIOLOGY 0F EDUCATION
The sociology of education is the study of how social institutions and individual
experiences affects education and its outcome
The sociology of education is the study of how social institutions and forces affect
educational processes and outcomes, and vice versa. By many, education is
understood to be a means of overcoming handicaps, achieving greater equality and
acquiring wealth and status for all (Sargent 1994)
It gained interest and lot of sociological studies done on the subject. Statistical and
field research across numerous societies showed a persistent link between an
individual's social class and achievement, and suggested that education could only
achieve limited social mobility . Sociological studies showed how schooling
patterns reflected, rather than challenged, class stratification and racial and sexual
discrimination . But sociology of education is a branch of study and very helpful in
finding the relation between sociology and education.
Thus, education is perceived as a place where children can develop according to
their unique needs and potentialities .The purpose of education is to develop every
individual to their full potential.
WHAT IS SOCIOLOGY ?

SOCIOLOGY OF
EDUCATION
Sociology of Education is a field of study which
examines social factors and interactions which influence
education and the educational process.
It is a discipline which attempts to analyze systematically
the sociological aspects, processes and patterns within the
educational phenomenon.
SOCIOLOGY OF
EDUCATION
Sociology of Education attempts to study and explain
concepts, activities and problems which are sociological in
nature but emanating from, and associated with all
situations of education.
Education involves various stakeholders: students,
parents, administrators, politicians, investors, the State,
international organizations, human rights groups, the
media and other groups with special interest in the
education process.
SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION
Sociology of education is the scientific analysis of the
social processes and social patterns in the school system:
the human relations both formal and informal. It is a
scientific analysis of the human relations in the field of
education. Survey of various approaches to educational
sociology have led to the conclusion that there is no place
for a sociological analysis and application in the field of
education, but rather the major contribution of sociology
to the educational system (Brookover, 1978).
