ME Math 9 Q2 0502 PS

This lesson teaches students about expressions with rational exponents and how to write them as radical expressions or vice versa. Students will learn that a rational exponent can be written as a radical expression by making the numerator of the rational exponent the exponent of the radicand and the denominator the index of the radical. The lesson provides examples of writing exponential expressions as radicals and radicals as exponentials and has students practice through examples.

Lesson 5.

Writing Expressions with

Rational Exponents as
Radical Expressions
Learning Competencies

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able

to do the following:

● Write expressions with rational exponents as

radicals and vice versa (M9AL-IIf-1).

● Simplify expressions with rational exponents

(M9AL-IIe-1)
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to

do the following:

● Properly write expressions with rational exponents

as radical expressions and vice-versa.

● Correctly apply the laws of exponents in simplifying

expressions with rational exponents.
Have you ever wondered how many people will there be in this
world in 10 years? How about in 100 years? How about in 1 000
years?
Have you ever wondered what kind of technology people will
have in the future? It may be interesting to imagine what kind of
life people will have in the future.
Did you know that you can use mathematics to estimate the
possible population in the next few years? The formula for the
population after years is , where is the initial population, is the
population growth rate, and is a special number, which we call a
natural number. Using this formula, you can estimate the
population of a certain place as long as you know the growth
rate of that place.
But you might wonder, rates are often expressed in decimal
numbers, right? How can use use decimal numbers as
exponents? Can you even compute for that? This is where your
knowledge about expressions with rational exponents comes in.

In this lesson, you will learn about expressions with rational

exponents and how to write them as radical expressions.
Essential Questions

● When is it most appropriate to write rational exponents

into radical expressions?

● What is the importance of simplifying expressions with

rational exponents?

Radical Expression

This is an expression containing the radical sign

Example:
The expression is a radical expression. The number 4 is the
index, and 8 is the radicand.
