BEFORE A NEWSPAPER CAN be printed, there must
be some news to be reported. The news story may have
been covered actually by the reporter, or it may have
been relayed to him by an eyewitness. It may also have
come from a press release through an announcement
made by an organization .
The reporters as well as the correspondents cannot
cover all events especially those that break outside
the country. So, the newspaper has to get the news
from news agencies like the Associated Press (AP),
Agence France-Presse (AFP), Philippine News
Service (PNS), Reuters (Britis News Agency), and
United Press International (UPI).
From its source, the copy goes to the city editor who
writes the printer's direction or the guidelines and
instructions to the compositor on the kinds of headlines
to be used. The copyreader or deskman edits the copy
and writes the headlines and guidelines on a separate
sheet of paper. The copy is brought to the composing
room. Here, the linotype man sets the story.
The lines of types or slugs are assembled by the compositor in a
long metal tray called the galley: When the galley is full, a few
impressions of proofs called the galley proofs are taken on a
small proof press,
The paper passes between the two and may be in the form of cut sheets or
in a web or roll. With a continuous web passing between the constantly
turning roller, the press can run very fast making 30,000 or more
impressions
an hour. The cylinders are arranged so as to print on both sides of the
paper as the web passes through the press.
A new method of printing called offset printing has
become popular.
It has several advantages over the cylinder and rotary
presses especially in printing color. Offset printing is
a process in which the inked impression is first made
on a rubber-covered roller, then transferred to the
paper.
Printing of the first edition must start at a fixed time called a
deadline so that the paper can be dispatched in time to reach its
farthest destination the next morning.
Except for big schools that print many thousand copies every issue,
and should therefore use the rotary press or offset printing, the
printing of school paper is less complicated. Here, letterpress
printing is resorted to.
Printing via computer is now done in almost
all progressive and modern schools, offices
and establishments. However, due to the lack
of the machine especially in the rural areas,
letterpress printing is still resorted to.
